Prediction: iPhone 2.1 - September 1st

Based on last years firmware updates, and now this years, i think it is safe to say that 2.1 should be released September 1st, or the first week of September.

If you notice with the 2.0.x updates:

2.1 - September 1st - Monday
2.0.2 - August 18th - Monday
2.0.1 - August 4th - Monday

Which were 2 weeks apart exactly, and i doubt was just a random coincidence.

Take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

Let's hope so. Although I want an update with as few bugs as possible. If that means waiting a bit longer, then so be it.

Nope. If they've pulled out the developer end of the beta then it's not going to be ready by September 1st. Apple is going to put this off as long as they can in order to ensure that the push notifications work perfect.

Push notifications don'thave to come with 2.1...

As with the sounds of the notifications being removed from the 4th beta, it's probably not going to come next month.

There are rumors now that Apple will delay push until possibly Macworld, being included in 2.2. Either way, after their last month, they really need it to work great.

All this indicates in that we might see 2.0.3 on Sept. 1.

Incorrect - push was pulled to facilitate a quicker release of 2.1

Sept 1? Doubtful - that's a holiday in the US. If we see it around then it'll be next Friday. I think its likely Beta 5 gets seeded in the coming week and then by 9/15 2.1 is released.

You're predicting that they're going to release 2.1 on labor day? Hah... Good luck with that one.

Software is ready when it's ready. To assume a consistent 2 week release schedule for the first 2 months after a product release is something management would do, not the developers.

Apple set a date for developers and if they have to push it back then it's a blow to the entire platform because it makes the iPhone a joke.

Link? I haven't seen this at all. September should still be expected as the release date.

I doubt this as well. 2.1 is coming out for push alone and major updates - we'll see 2.0.3, 2.0.4, etc. before then instead of them releasing 2.1.

they're referring to the front page news the other day. the 2.1 beta 4 that was seeded to devs had push pulled out (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/16/...ation-service/). so speculation is that push won't be in 2.1

That's just silly speculation. If the backend isn't complete yet there's no reason for Apple to begin allowing development of the frontend because it can entirely change. Apple will get push up by the end of September.

Not even close to the truth. There was a post (Credible, with screens link: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...t=3G+reception) from another Iphone SDK dev who said that beta 4 of 2.1 significantely improved 3G signal problems, but there was some kind of problem with GPS. PUSH was removed from beta 4 when it had been in the prior 3. Why? To Facilitate a quicker release of 2.1 to address the problems with the 3G reception (which until beta 4 hadn't been in 2.1). Apple is shifting priorities. If removing push allows them to get the 2.1 to us quicker and fix a core functionality of the phone over a bell or whistle its the right call to be made and the call I'd expect from their team.

How you can even say 2.1 is coming out for push alone is beyond me...and IMHO damages your credibility when clearly that's not been the case. The reality is now that 2.1 is primarly focused on fixing the 3G reception issues. Anything else...well that'd be icing on the cake.

I actually thought 2.0.2 was 2.1 after push was removed and the number was deprecated and 2.1 would remain but alas it wasn't and it looks like 2.1 will be 2.1 and 2.2 (or 2.1.1) will be push...

There is no reason for Apple to include the frontend if the backend is not complete and stable yet. 2.1 will be out by the end of September with push - I guarantee that.

Has there been a previous update released on a holiday? (Tomorrow is Labor Day for US folks.).

There have been but I don't think that the final version of 2.1 is ready yet. I haven't heard of any new betas in a while. Again, I think we'll be waiting until the end of the month for such a major update.

That's not to say that there won't be a 2.0.3 update...that could very well happen and I almost expect it.
