Could a twitter app utilise PUSH?
I don't know the detail of Apple's PUSH API (only know it's been left out of recent developer builds).
However twitter has recently ceased it's UK SMS service and considering that's how I heavilly relied on communication with my girlfriend in the US it's come as quite a blow. Could a twitter app potentially utilise PUSH so that there's for example a 1 new message (like what appears on the Mail and SMS icons) which would solve all my headaches? Is this what possibilities PUSH holds? |

Twitter themselves could make use of Apple's push API directly in place of SMS alerts or if a third party wanted to then they would have to have their own server architecture setup to connect to Twitter through their API, monitor for any tweets that need pushing and then push it out to you, meaning you would have to register with a third party service.
A lot of people are assuming this push service is going to automagically work and eliminate the need for third party servers but that is an incorrect assumption except if a service you are already a member of such as AIM or Twitter plan on implementing the push themselves. |

Twinkle are most likely to be the first with a push Twitter app as they already run their own server as they run the Twinkle service side by side with Twitter. It's confusing, but it works. They have already said they are chomping at the bit to get push working.

I agree push for twitter would only make sense for things like notification of direct messages or maybe @ replies as well.

Couldn't help myself but brining back this topic.

I think push would be great for Twitter, It would keep my inbox uncluttered, if that was an option.

Maybe if someone sends your a private message, then PUSH would be great, but if they send a reminder everytime someone updates their status, then
. lol.

Yeah, the idea would be to send a notification every time somebody @replies you or direct messages you..

TwitterFon Pro will have push notifications, as I'm sure Tweetie will also, almost as soon as 3.0 is released to the general public.

After 3.0 comes out, if TwitterFon doesn't support Push I will certainly buy something that does!

I would prefer bulk push notification eg check every 10/15/30 mins set by the user and just display the badge with an optional sound. i Know nothing about making apps but i set my AOL mail to do this on the hour pre 3.0 so it should be able to be done post 3.0 to most capable developers.
I was actually surprised at the lack of push support at launch as many people had been pre-empting this for 2.0 I hope to see more 3.0 features before the end of the summer =) |

Check Twitter in 10 minutes and your bound to have tweets. Push would only be effective if they allowed you to customize what is being pushed. As others have mentioned, DMs and @replies would be wonderful. If that were the case, who needs SMS and MMS? You can do all that sh@t via Twitter. Unless of course it's private.
I totally would use DM more with push.

On a related note, check out TweetBeep.com.
It's like Google Alerts but for Twitter. Be notified when someone tweets a word or phrase you set. I have no relationship with them, other than as a happy customer (though it's free, plus they have a premium service which I haven't needed).

It would be nice to be able to choose who I want to receive push updates from instead of getting SMS updates from the few people that I do.
