iPhone 3G Connectivity Suppose to get better with 2.0.2 (AT&T Sends SMS Notifcation)
I just received a free text message from AT&T and Apple saying that the software update that was released last Monday was suppose to help the 3G connection. Well, with my experience since upgrading to 2.0.2 my connection has basically dropped to 2 bars or less while on 3G in a 3G-enabled city (Dallas, TX) where I am suppose to have excellent connection. Since Monday I have had about 5 or 6 dropped calls, and it takes me about 30 minutes to receive text messages (I tested this out by having one of my friends send me a text message).
I am an Apple supporter. They have amazing computers and iPods and I have recommended them to my friends when they asked me if they should get a PC or a Mac. I only wish the iPhone 3G could be just as reliable. Currently I have switched my 3G connection to off so I am on EDGE, and I have 5 bars where ever I am. The message from AT&T and Apple said: "A free message from Apple and AT&T: An important software update for iPhone 3G has been available on iTunes since this past Monday. To get it, simply synch your iPhone 3G with iTunes and click the "Check For Update" button. Has anyone had a better connection with 3G since downloading this update? Thanks. |

Yup. Just got the text as well. It's basically a blast text to anyone with an iPhone.

I wonder if they are tracking who has what firmware and sending only to certain groups? I disabled Apple's kill switch for 3rd party apps on my phone. I love Apple but no way do I want them to have any control over my phone whatsoever.

Nope, I updated to 2.0.2 and immediately noticed a much less stable 3G data signal.
Example, although I only have 1 bar of 3G at my desk at work, I could browse data without issue at a reasonable speed. Now with that same 1 bar, I can test Edge and 3G and they are getting almost the same results....which is kinda sad. With a better signal, 3G is faster but not as fast as it was before I updated to 2.0.2. Also even with a great signal, since 2.0.2 I have had the 3G connection simply not work even though it was indicated I was on 3G. This has happened enough that for the first time since I got the 3G (launch day) this is the first time I have switched off 3G. I even downgraded back to 2.0.1 and still have the same issues now but from what I've read, I believe the modem firmware is updated with 2.0.2 but when reinstalling 2.0.1 the newer modem firmware is left in place. This leads me to believe that these new 3G problems are limited to the new modem firmware. Wish I knew a way to downgrade that modem firmware back to the 2.0.1 version. |

If you ever do a forum search, you will find several existing threads that already talk about what 2.0.2 is supposed to do, what it actually does, etc.

That seems very interesting, and also, a turn on Apple's strategy. Usually, they like to interfere as LITTLE as possible and be behind the scenes, just like their software. It's also interesting that the call for the text messages actaully resulted in them. Very interesting.
A text message, though, is most likeley a VERY efficient way of communicating quite unobtrusively with customers. Many people (heaven forbid) do not use email, and wouldnt like an automated computer calling them. And yet, everyone HAS to have a phone number, so you might as well text them. Apple seems to be more vocal about current issues than in the past. |

I really like the idea though... but.. this means AT&T knows what firmware we are using, because I didnt get this text... Meaning they already know im at 2.0.2!

In my particular case, I had maybe 3 dropped calls prior to 2.0.2 total. Still not great, but wasn't too worrying. Since 2.0.2, I have had most of my outgoing calls dropped at least once (most often multiple times) before getting to a dial tone, and probably 25-30% of the calls that do connect (incoming or outgoing) drop mid conversation while stationary. Not an improvement on this end.
For reference, this is in downtown Toronto. Rogersland basically, where I've never had less than 4 bars on any phone I've owned (3G or otherwise), let alone repeated call dropping. |

BTW, I've had no connectivity issues, either, with any of the firmware versions. I've had one dropped call since July 25th. (I'm just saying it, since most posts are about problems)

I think it would be better if Apple had a way to send a message to iTunes telling it to check for an update (or just that one existed) instead of waiting the week or two for the next check. I guess that would be push notification of an update. Although a free text message isn't too bad. |
