iTunes 8 and iPod Nanos on Sept 9th?

Electronista reports on a few more comments made by Kevin Rose during this week's Twit podcast.

Coloring in details left out of his controversial blog entry, Rose alleges early on in the episode that the new devices and their companion jukebox software should be unveiled on September 9th, or just two weeks from now.

Rose also claims iTunes 8 may have the ability to make music recommendations based on the user's music library.

yeah, it's called the Mini Store, and started in iTunes 7. I would be surprised if iTunes 8 didn't have that.

What about the so called GPS Touch that the other forums have been talking about?

I don't see why the iPod touch needs GPS - unless TomTom comes out with its offline mapping application, and Apple agrees to position the iPod touch as a GPS navigator, something I don't see happening.

I would like to see this on September 9th. Logic Studio was released on September 12th 2007, and comes with Quicktime 7 Pro. An early September release for Quicktime 8 would be great for a Logic Studio update.

When I read that, I was rather thinking along the lines of Pandora - make suggestions based on music that you have which is similar to what you're now playing (and I don't simply mean the genre tags are the same).

Makes sense.

So... September 2 is when we will know. Too bad we may have to wait until 9 P.M. or so like last year's Mac event.

An early September event would give time for the MacBook redesign at the end of the month.

If iTunes gets a rewrite anything like what iMovie went through, then we may see the loss of the MiniStore.

As others have said, this is already a feature in iTunes. I have my doubts as to Kevin's predictions. I even doubt the image he has released.

Well, if the rumors for an updated Nike+ for the iPhone/Touche are true, a GPS would provide realtime data without needing a shoe transmitter and dongle.

And besides the TomTom type use, there are lots of people who buy garmin eTrek pocket gpses for hiking, boating, etc. and these are stand alone devices with no WiFi, 3G or other communication features, so surely an iTouch with GPS could go after those markets fairly easily.

But don't those devices have maps on the device itself? Or are they merely coordinate loggers? If the touch is not used for that, I can't see much benefit for touch owners knowing that they are are 12.3456 by 323.7395. The maps are greatly needed.

I like to dump CD's in loosless, but AAC 192 is fine for my iPhone

And transcode videos so I don't have to get the error This video can't be played on the device, when it has no problem in iTunes it selfs.

and/or transcode down to the resolution to fit my iPhone/iPod as HD is greast and nice for my computer screen/TV screen, but wast of space on my iPhone/iPod

Yup, i've been suggesting this one for years on apple's suggestion form. Ever since I saw the option on my Gen 1 Shuffle....It makes no sense why they would not include this option for all iPods.

Yes and yes. The eTrek does include maps (and it has a small amount of flash memory for that purpose ... 64 MB or somesuch ... this is large enough to hold 100k maps for all of CA and 24k maps for most of the places I hike without too much reshuffling) and plots your position on the on-screen map. This is great.

On the other hand, there are also highly useful coordinate loggers, which typically have no display whatsoever and/or which display nothing more than current position and statistics on the tripe (how long, how fast, average speed, current speed, etc). These are great for fitness (a HUGE step up from the likes of the Nike+ idea), as well as for outdoor photography (the track logs can be automagically matched up to all the photos you took in Yosemite, so you can see where you were standing in the park when you took each picture ... granted, this still doesn't tell you which direction you were looking, but it's better than relying on "Yosemite" being put into the photo comments tag).

IMHO, Apple (or a third-party dev) could easily create a Garmin ForeRunner killer app (no turn-by-turn directions, just log the route, show stats on speed/distance throughout, and sync the track log to the computer when you get back home). It would take a little more effort (primarily because the map files are all proprietary right now, but a partnership with Topo or the like would brush that issue aside) to get a really nice eTrek killer app.

IMHO, Garmin is a really fat cat company sitting on top of their handheld devices. The devices are rather well designed, which is why Garmin does such a great job. On the other hand, the software kinda really stinks (especially for the Mac, but the byzantine Windows apps I need to use to change maps on my eTrek are just plain painful to use as well), the devices are way too expensive, and map updates are their "blades" (if there are two similar models, razors and blade where the razors are cheap but the blades are expensive, and iPod and songs where the iPod is the profit center and the songs are dirt cheap, Garmin is running the iPod and blades model ...)

I've mentioned in other forums there are lots of good reasons to put a GPS facility in Touch. Certainly an off line mapping facility is one of them but there are lots of other good reasons. GPS can be useful for a number of applications that need to know location but not necessarily put you on a map.

I'd actually like to see a release o 2.1 for IPhone to get us out of buggy software hell. Once they get things stabilized I'd like to see Apple start to add the missing features to iPhone.

GPS on Touch for me right now is not a big deal as I have an iPhone now. Still I can see many people taking advantage of such on Touch. If it works as well as it does on iPhone it will be very useful indeed.

I can think of one reason the new touches might need GPS (and this is wild speculation). 3G modem in them perhaps?

Think about it. A lot of people already have cell phones, and are locked into contracts. Others have company paid cell phones, and aren't going to get another.

Still, a lot of them have iPods. Some of them probably have iPods and GPSs. If I were in that boat, but I could pay $200 for an iPod touch and $30 a month for just 3g data (including exchange email), SMS, turn by turn directions, and (since I'm greedy) iChat, I would do it in a heart beat.

Perhaps I'm delusional, but for people who just aren't iPhone candidates for one reason or another, this would be the perfect middle ground.

Might further slow AT&T's network though...

Isn't there a "Just for You" section of iTunes? I remember seeing that for five minutes on the iTunes Store home page and then it disappeared. I clicked on it to see the entire list and it said something to the effect of: "These were hand-picked just for you."
