Constant Slow Speeds on File Transfers on Macbook Wireless

I have a G class NetGear router, with a Macbook White 2.4GHZ 2GB 160GB.

My problem is basically that file transfers be them torrents, over Adium etc are painfully slow. Yet my desktop machine is FAR quicker.

Anyone know why?
