OMG, I am pretty sure, well it is a hunch, that your "niece" has seen many cars in her life. I don't think it will be too hard for her to reproduce an object with 2 or more wheels. See if she comes up with a new idea that is totally different to anything ever seen before. OMG, that may entitle her to lots of cash in the future!

Wouldn't it be more accurate to call Mr. Kramer the "inventor" of the 1000 other portable MP3 players that existed before the iPod?

This guy is as much the inventor of the iPod as Karl Benz is the inventor of the Toyota Corolla.

If you'd read the original article it linked to, you'd see that not only did he draw one, he built one too (although it could only hold 3.5 min of music given hardware constraints of 1979). Did your niece go on to build a working car, too? This guys only problem is he was too poor to hold on to the patent.

The man was certainly thinking before his time, as his prototype of a Digital Audio Player came out AT THE SAME TIME AS THE WALKMAN (same year), a few years before CDs and 20 years (!) before the Rio made the concept a viable product.

He can rightfully claim to have invented DAPs, but not the "iPod". Indeed, I don't think that apple ever claimed they "invented" DAPs. at most that they "re-invented" them and transformed an irrelevant gadget into a must-have phenomenon.

Although he has only to blame his company and/or himself to have let this slip into the public domain without IP protection, it would be cool if Apple would come up with some sort of "appreciation gift" for his contributions.

maybe Meucci's heirs can also ask compensation for him inventing the iPhone!

Apple basically did this to prove that Burst.com didn't invent the device. Since Kramers patent had lapsed in '88 they don't have to pay him royalties.
