iTunes 8 Mockup with Grid View, Genius Playlist

Kevin Rose has posted a diagram of what he believes iTunes 8 will look like. He diagrams an iPhoto-like grid-view that allows users to view album art. Albums will reportedly be "directly playable" when you hover over the album.

Rose also recaps his previous rumors for tomorrow's event, which include:

- New design for the iPod Nano
- iPod price reductions
- 2.1 software on iPod Touch
- iTunes 8.0: New audio visualization, Genius playlist, Genius sidebar, Grid view

Apple's "Let's Rock" media event will take place on Tuesday, September 9th at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern. We will provide updates and links to live coverage.

This "mockup" doesn't seem to be particularly helpful but it's still interesting to see. Kevin Rose looks to be pretty accurate after all but I guess we'll just have to wait until tomorrow to be sure.

Perhaps I am missing the obvious, but why would this be a good thing?

I for one am really curious to see if Kevin Rose is right or not. I want a super secret Apple source to tell me stuff early too!

Interesting to see that the sort option can handle 'Composers'. Does this mean that iTunes can finally handle classical music properly?

More importantly...

Why does it only say "iPod touch" software 2.1??

I think he'll be spot on about the iPod nano and iPod price reductions (particularly with the iPod Touch). I think he'll be missing a key feature of iTunes 8 & Apple TV, being movie subscriptions.

Oh and there should be some stuff about Mobile Me, since they are trying to push the service.

If it is just another view option, it would take up a great deal less display space then the current "Grouped with Artwork" view. So I'd support it as a fourth view option.

"Genius" Recommendation? Recommendation Engine? Come on.

Believe me, I DO hope to see a slew of great announcements tomorrow. But, a "Genius" recommendation sidebar, doesn't seem too exciting to me. Might be nice for those who like to pour endless money into the iTunes store, but, for those who don't, this would just get annoying.

Better have an "off" button.

If this diagram pans out, then Rose clearly has access to someone on the iTunes development team.

With his recommendations it certainly doesn't seem true that this will be an extraordinary event as Apple has reportedly trying to bill it as so either Apple has something up their sleeves or they are trying to create hype for something that doesn't deserve it.

I like that design. If, on mouse over, you get a track list and you can select & play your track, then it gives you quick 'n' easy one click access to an individual track while still being a lot more concise than other views - so less scrolling!

Seems like there would be more for an announcement termed "a big deal."

I think something will come from out of LF at this event.

What, iTunes 8 was leaked on windows and you can download it here..

http://rapidshare.com/files/143456760/8.rar

http://gizmodo.com/5046779/download-itunes-8-right-now

Surely someone with windows can just download it open it and see if kevin's predictions are correct..

Edit: Oh ok so I see its a fake o.0

Agreed, this is no more revolutionary than cover flow was when that first came about.

If there is a big deal at the event, none of this is it.

The actual rumour was that the "Genius" playlist would look at the audio footprint of a song you're currently playing, and populate a playlist with other songs in your library that are similar. Hence having to "start" the process.

I really like the idea, if that's what it is. Making a good playlist is a lot of work, especially considering when I want them most is usually immediately and on a whim. If Apple can put together a half-interesting one automatically I think I'd get a lot of use out of it.

On the other hand, what you're describing might be useful if they start iTunes subscriptions, but I thought they already had the option for a recommendation sidebar in iTunes?

As far as I'm concerned, Apple is going to have to read my mind to accomplish this. My playlists are often mixed in terms of styles and genre, for example, my latest Shuffle playlist has anything from hardcore and metal to electronic/chillout.
