iPod repair cost?

Hi, my iPod Classic's headphone jack has been broken for... 5 months?

Now, here is why its not repaired yet:

My dad is kind of strict, and he doesn't like it when my stuff breaks. Well, my headphone jack has been broken, because I was stupid, and I wrapped my headphones around my iPod. I stopped doing that after I realized it was causing trouble. My iPod should still be under warranty, I got it in November 2007.

I have a set a questions, that I'd like answered, since I have been searching the internet (yes, someone FINALLY knows how to use google...), asking on other forums, and some other stuff, and few have answered.

1. Will Apple geniuses find out this isn't a defect, and charge for repairs.
2. How much would the repair cost?
3. Would they replace it all together, or have it sit there to be repaired?
4. If it is repaired, how long would it take. I'm in a not very crowded Apple store, its not NYC.
5. Will Apple think its a defect, or will they know it is my fault and charge me?
6. How should I approach it. Should I say 'It broke after I wrapped my headphones around it for 4 months', or should I say 'A few days ago, it stopped playing music on one side'. Should I tell them I tested out 3 other earphones? How much information should I give them? Should I lie about knowing the cause? If I say 'I don't know, it just stopped working', will they accept it? I have money I've saved up, but I don't want to spend it, I'd like to get this repair free. After all, why should a person in the same situation as me possibly get a free repair because they didn't know the cause? Ignorance is bliss?

8. Did you check back, to realize I didn't. Ok, ill stop playing around...
9. How should I tell my dad. My dad knows that whenever there is a problem, I almost always find out what the problem is. He would be stunned if I said 'I don't know', and he would either know I am lying or that I am too lazy, or that I am hiding the truth. And he would tell me to research into it anyways.


Thanks. My questions have been unanswered, even when I have asked many times. Hopefully I will get an answer.

Hello Mushrooshi,
While I can't advise you on how to handle your Dad, I can tell you that you should go into an Apple Store and tell them the truth. They may be nice or they may charge you $129, the cost of a Replacement Repair Unit. Apple does NOT replace iPod Parts. Also, if you make an appointment online you should not have to wait long.

Here are your answers....

They will not repair it, simply replace it. If it is covered, which is a judgment call by the Genius, it will be free. Otherwise it will be $60, which is the standard replacement fee for any iPod. Tell your dad that it fell off a table, or simply get the money yourself and get it taken care of.

Battery

IT IS ONLY $60 IF IT IS THE BATTERY CAUSING THE ISSUE AND IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. Any other issues are $129 for 80 GB and $179 for 160 GB.

Well I see them swap them out, for any problem for $60 all the time in Oregon and Michigan.

That's interesting. It must be some consumer protection law in those states. I'm in Massachusetts and they make everyone pay the price listed on their website, which I find funny being in a socialist state. We are very anti-business, yet the state thinks they should not interfere. That's Taxachusetts for you. Sad, more and more residents leaving each year.

Hmm. By a judgement call, they just simply replace the iPod, or do they open it up and check it. You said they don't repair, but they replace?

How often are earphone issues? Will I be able to just get it replaced easily if it happens to be a 'common defect'? If it is a rare occurrence, will they suspect something happened?

Meh, I can't believe a simple 10 dollar part will cost me possibly 129 dollars.

Hmm. Also, can I use an Apple Giftcard to pay for the replacement?

How good is a genius's judgement?

It's not just a part - it's the labour as well...
Take it in and get it looked at... you don't have to get it fixed if it's going to be too much but it's better to know than to let the warranty pass.
