2.1 adds only 1 feature (genius) which whilst seemingly popular wasn't something regarded as missing.

So all we have is bug fixes and something we didn't want, therefore looking to 2.2 is normal.

Nice Wants!

I Agree.

Why no MMS Apple?
I would have thought it would be so easy to implement?!

iPhone Enhancements That I Could Certainly Use (ranked in order of priority):

1) Spotlight Search - a proper all-encompassing search icon on the home screen. Email, Calendar, Contacts, Phone Call Log, Notes, SMS, iPod Media, Photo metadata etc. would all be searchable if so configured in iPhone Settings. It's currently a pain to find specific email messages or meetings. I really miss this from my BlackBerry, and I think it is long overdue on iPhone especially if you're a business person.
2) Notes and To-do Task item synchronization with Outlook, iPhone, MobileMe, and Leopard. I would like to finally stop using Outlook and migrate completely to Mac. MobileMe could be advertised as a great Outlook to Mac data migration conduit if this all synchronized. To-do/Tasks would also be searchable on iPhone using Spotlight (see #1 above). Again, I really miss this from my Blackberry/Outlook.
3) Copy/Paste...seriously.
4) Local file storage to save documents, also with synchronization with the MobileMe iDisk. I would love to have access to certain documents when I'm on the go or out of network coverage area.
5) Dial phone numbers in Calendar items. This would be very helpful in case I'm running late to a meeting, LOL!
6) Improved phone call log that also shows the length of the call.
7) Mark email messages as read/unread.
8) Manage email folders on iPhone.
9) The ability to display a personalized owner/contact message on the screen when the iPhone is locked. I have twice lost and subsequently recovered my BlackBerry because the people that found it saw the onscreen message and called and left me a message. My shortsightedness/bad holster, and their honesty earned them a cool $100. There are decent people out there who would like to return lost property.
10) Remote wipe from the MobileMe website in the unfortunate event where the iPhone is lost or stolen. Remote wipe should both optionally PIN lock the SIM card to prevent usage, and leave intact the personalized owner/contact message on the locked iPhone screen should a decent person wish to return a lost iPhone.
11) Add additional meeting attendee(s) to existing meeting in the Calendar.
12) Ability to add multiple files/photos (from local storage/camera roll) to a single email message.
13) Ability to forward a text message.
14) Nike+iPod support using the dock connector receiver like the iPod nano. I have my iPhone with me when I'm out for a walk or run, so I'd rather not have to take an iPod with me when there's one built into the phone. Let me worry about running my battery down if this is the concern.
15) MMS, although I doubt this will ever be added.

I hope the good folks from Apple sees this. The majority of these items would improve my productivity. Thanks for all the hard work put into giving us iPhone. I love using my iPhone, but numbers 1 and 2 above are my biggest concerns as I'm trying to migrate completely from PC/Outlook/Blackberry to Mac/iPhone. I read an article where supposedly AT&T sales people were recommending BlackBerry for email warriors instead of iPhone. Let's put that to rest by Macworld San Francisco 2009.

Be well everyone.

Cheers,

Instead of thinking what's coming next I think we should give apple a round of applause. They got this update right. Their focusing on the important fixes and bugs and getting the current features right before adding new ones. Go !

ToD and DoW controls for Email, SMS, and ringer settings

I miss the Blackberry features to control the email notifications to silent and no vibrate based on time of day. Who wants to hear the phone chirp, or vibrate all night long when new email arrives? Who wants to change the settings every day on the alerts? I don't. I want a time of day and day of week control for all the notifications so I can set email and SMS to silent operation automatically. Is that so hard to do? I can't imagine how this was not brought out before.

All of these are features I used on my Treo constantly and would love on my beloved iPhone ASAP:

Cut/copy/paste
MMS
Forward/delete/timestamp individual texts
Universal search
Week view in calendar
File management
Notes/memos/to-do sync
Better phone log

Less important to me, but still on all other smartphones:

Personalize alerts other than ringtone
Bluetooth or wireless sync
A2DP
Mass marking of e-mails

- SMS forwarding!
- Alternate SMS views (I would prefer just to see one text at a time...)
- Additional bluetooth profiles
- Personalize alerts

Those are my main gripes atm...

I'd like to see a good way to transfer notes to and from my iPod. It really pisses me off that I can't right now.

I am surprised that so few have mentioned this:

Auto/Quicktext: All other platforms have this feature. Enter a couple of short keystrokes and get a whole word or even a whole line of text. Included in this feature could be Date/Timestamps.

Maybe we're not talking about the same thing, but doesn't it already do that? One of the things on my wishlist would be the ability to add terms to the autotext dictionary. Autotext is always changing my nickname (my real name, not my screen name) to all-caps because it is the same as a common acronym. It drives me crazy, actually.

In addition to other things listed here, I would love the ability to send a text to multiple recipients (not forwarding; sending one message to several people at the same time). Even my crappy old super-basic phone did that.

That's a heck of a list you've got there! Steve Jobs should print it, frame it, and hang it in his office.

Seriously, I'd love to see all that stuff added.

Hmmm

2.2 for iPhone 2G needs a better screen resolution for example the same resolution that's on the iPhone 3G as it looks way better and is more battery efficient so i've heard.

2.2 definaately needs landscape texting as my hands r becoming restless LOL
:
i can't believe 2.1 doesn't have landscape texting

oh well

im happy with the new stability

and why are people saying that the camera is slower :S

its so not!

Repeated notifications (2.1 gives 2 more beeps for texts - still needs option to notify until the message is picked up, and also extend this to missed calls and voicemails)
More powerful vibration
Email notifications on lock screen
Call log that shows length of call / call timer on screen while on call
SMS counter (number of sent/received messages)
SMS character counter (so we know if we've gone over 160 characters)
Native dictionary app

I think that 2.2 will only have something small like Push and anymore bug fixes.

3.0, however, I think we are going to see more of what we want:
- MMS
- Copy/Paste
- etc..

Only time will tell.

Except that 3.0 will come out on the shiny iPhone 4G a year from now.

By the way, it will also be called "iPhone MMS" or "iPhone Copy/Paste", depending on what feature they decide to introduce in 3.0 and which one they decide to keep for 3.1

More control over the camera
Landscape texting
Flash
File storage
Setting to be able to disable the SMS alert
Customizable dictionary as I'm getting sick of the iPhone's need to correct spelling that doesn't need to be corrected
Choices in font and text size
This may be trivial but I'd like to see a numeric indicator of what's left of battery life like you can on a PowerBook or MacBook

Well said. That's my list almost exactly, just in a slightly different order. I used search all the time on my BlackBerry, as well as copy/paste (its even nice just highlighting blocks of text to delete).

If Apple truly wants to compete in the enterprise, I think they need to come close to the feature sets of other smartphones (RIM, Palm, WinMo). Apple excels in media and UI. The others seem to excel in business functionality. If Apple could make the iPhone even more business like, it'd be the ultimate device

For me, the most needed function would need to be full PUSH with the ability for background notifications on 3rd-Party apps. Apps like AIM and other chat apps would be much better if they were able to receive messages after a person leaves the app. I thought that this would most certainly be included in 2.1

Here is what I would like to expect from any new iPhone firmwares:

1. MMS (I don't use it very often at all, but I get picture messages all the time)
2. Ability to to alter notifications on the locked screen.
3. Search phone for contacts, email, SMS, etc with one application.

There is more, but I can't think right now. :P
