How to Get a Microphone Working through your Headphone Jack!
You can use any headset (needs to have four rungs of metal on the jack), and the only app that works right now is called SPECTRUM
![]() ![]() AWESOME!Edit: Videos: It works! -- Yes, it is a 2G iPod Touch -- With Music Update: A free app called Palringo Instant Messenger supports recording and sending audio clips to your friends from the iPod Touch using the same headset/microphone I used in the video! Just curious what you are using, specifically - iPT 1G, 2G, which mic, etc.
At the moment you might have just used your iPhone. If it is a 2G iPT with one of the headphone/mics it IS news. No one could say if the mic actually worked. With the 2G and the headphone-mics it means it is only a matter of time before apps use the mic to record voices or perhaps voip.

So which headphone-mic set? Or was it just a mic of some sort.
You should post details if you are going to post something like this.

I HEAR NO SOUND!
FAKE! Actually, I can't wait until they make iPT versions of Skype. This proves it's just a month away, or less, I hope. I would pay $3 a month for Skype so I can wander the house, and WiFi areas using it as a phone. And Apple would get my $79 for the new headphones.

Apple has said they will allow VOIP over WiFi, so hopefully someone makes a program soon. It isn't like I have to have it, but it sure would be cool to have it. It would be sad if no one utilizes the obvious VoiPiness of the iPT.
I wish they would open up all those guitar tuner apps to the iPT now. BTW, I saw there was already a mic attachment for iPTs for quite a while now.

It's just odd that Apple said they would allow WiFi voip but no one has developed it yet. I saw a program called SoonR for the iPhone, though. Not sure if that needed a jailbreak.

Yes there is one, but it is currently marked as iPhone only, and that means the new iTunes (8) prevents it from installing. If that tag were removed, or a separate device ID were made for the 2G, it would work fine!

No one has access to the Apple headsets yet, so no one else has worried about it is my guess. For what it's worth, the headset from my Samsung Instinct works with the voice recorder app on the new Nano. Same 4 contact connector. My guess is that ANY 3.5mm 4 contact headset will work. You'll need the Apple ones for remote control though.

No, the one I have hooked up there has a silver button on it that pauses with one click, goes to the next song with two, and pervious song with three clicks.
You just plug in headphones into that and you're good to go! |

Bounty I thi- hey, wait a minute! Useless? I found the one app that works with the iPod Touch microphone capabilities, and you say USELESS?
I guess it is useless if you don't like/have a use for it. Point taken

Not useless at all.
Steve introduced four hardware improvements for the new Touch: 1. Speaker 2. Volume Controls 3. Nike+ and of course, the Mic option. Nike+ and the Microphone are the only things that add new functionality to the Touch, so I would say it is very important! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i wouldnt say useless, bt parts of it arent news. a microphone through the headphone jack has been used in previous ipods as well, but the fact that you found an app that works with it, days after the keynote is interesting. it might have been targeted for the iphone first though.

There have always been iPod Dock (or in the old iPods, those weird connections on top) microphone attachments, but this is a visual confirmation of a headphone jack alone doing the job, and on an iPod that can connect to the internet nonetheless! Also- that app came out one day BEFORE the keynote. Go figure. ![]() That suggests that the old apps were compatible, it just won't let us install them (like voicenote).
