Occasionally when I hit the Home button on my iPhone (3G w/ 2.1), I have to hit it 4-5 times before it actually takes me to the home screen. Why is this? It can be very annoying because it is like the phone will not respond...
I had this exact problem when I got the phone. Actually it was my second phone. The first one had a dead pixel.
Anyway, try this trick. Push a harder on the first push and see if it returns home. That was my problem, and the Apple store swapped it out with no hassle. It may appear that it goes home on the fourth or fifth time, but you are probably getting a little aggravated and pushing harder by that time.
