so far the user reviews don't look promising...................

i really want a spreadsheet app, but due to this app's revews i might wait for Mariner Calc for the iphone. Their blog hasn't been updated since mid June though. anyone know the status of mariner's spreadsheet app for the iphone that they supposedly have been working on for the past 6 months?

Looks like a great start, but I'm waiting to see what the folks at Dataviz put out. They will most likely release a full suite for $19.99 or less. I don't think they can get away with charging $30 or $40 like they do on other platforms.

from website,

Version 1.0.1 is currently in development. It will have the following new functionality:
Import files from Excel

----
until that happens it's a no go. better to wait for Dataviz

iWork? Office?

I wonder when iWork and Office will be ported/developed for iPhone... I'm sure iWork will come first, though, as (to quote Ballmer) "...the iPhone will fail...". Then when it doesn't, he'll eat his words and MacBu will develop an iPhone version by 2010/11...

Maybe Macworld 2009 with the introduction of iWork '09...? Maybe even bundled with iWork and Office Pro/Standard/Full/Whatever they call the high-end version these days?

But then there would be no money to be made on the App Store, I know...

One can hope, can't he?

looks fairly impressive and this is the beauty behind the app store. when apple refuses to/doesn't have time to add in a mobile iwork app and let people save/import/export documents, someone else will eventually make that work.

so, since i hope it is inevitable apple releases a mobil iwork sort of program, how long until this one gets rejected since it will then duplicate functionality?

I'd wait a bit. Currently, there are only 3 reviews in the App store. 2 1-star apps, and a 5-star app, which was written by someone named "CPA-Cal"

Surprised Apple didn't kill it, since they are planning to implement Cut/Copy/Paste sometime in the next 5 years.

That's a problem if landscape orientation isn't supported. The site doesn't seem to say one way or the other.

How about linking up to a printer over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as well - now that would be something special and useful!!

I was ready to buy it until I read the detailed description of woes encountered per a one-star review. Since the 5-star review offers NO details, I'll pass for now.

Well in all fairness the formula was incorrectly entered into the spreadsheet, but the program did calculate the correct answer, based on what the user asked for. Garbage in, garbage out.

I can think of lots of uses for this app. Some of my spreadsheets are huge (read: impractical for an iPhone), but many are rather simple and would be fully usable on a handheld screen.

Wow the dev was always going to be running up hill with all the anticipation and expectations but it looks to be a very good and solid start.

I think its an App to keep a watchful eye on.

I'll splash out when a few more of the 'excel' functions are supported.

I'm looking forward to an entry from DataViz too. I love Documents to Go. I hope they can come close to the functionality to that on the iPhone.

It's too bad Apple makes it so hard for the developers. No built-in cut/copy/paste, can't share data among apps, can't sync over usb cable... all other platforms can do these things -- why not iPhone?

I think DataViz will likely do a bang up job of Office support -- within the stifling constraints of the SDK.

For instance, I doubt we'll see any of this:
  • Ability to sync files from your PC, other than through WiFi (and my company does not allow WiFi, so that's just about it for me)
  • Ability to open a Word/Excel attachment from an incoming email, edit it, then email out the new version as an attachment
