Apps Running in Background!

Well our concern, need, want has been answered. For all of you that are jailbroken, check out "Backgrounder".

Jailbroken?

I thought most of the jailbreak applications that need it already have background running.

Not all jailbreak apps can run in the background after you exit them. The nice thing about Backgrounder is that it works for ANY app, appstore, installer or cydia!

I just installed it and had simplify, aol radio, tuner, pandora, and aim all running in the background (not all at the sametime, but one by one).

Sweetness if you ask me!

If anyone remembers the original Mac (128k), it couldn't background regular apps either. Then, after the 512k came out, Hertzfeld created Switcher which could rotate 3 (or maybe 4) running apps in and out of view. He later sold the idea or technology to Apple for integration into Multifinder, and eventually MacOS System 7.

I guess the biggest difference here is that the iPhone OS is already capable of multitasking. It was a conscious decision to not allow background apps, though not one I entirely agree with.

The OS might be capable, but the hardware limitations (single CPU, limited memory, no swap drive) could easily lead to bad user experiences.

Backgrounder now available in Cydia

Lets you run apps in the background, fantastic for IM clients such as Beejive, alerts you and displays updated badge whist doing other things or in standby. Also good for things like tracking gps position etc.

Available on Cydia now via BigBoss repo

Battery life dropping to worse than it is now would also be a problem. The CPU is pretty capable, but memory limitations would become an issue.

Apple needs to get their Push API released ASAP. The entire argument against background apps was made with the expectation that Push would provide the functionality most apps run in the background for. Obviously there are other cases for background than just network notifications, but still, it is a minimum requirement for them to justify no background apps.

omg...really?? App Store too?? I might consider actually getting this then. Would love to get IMs instantly from AIM (tbh, AIM has the best icon out of all the IMs). And of course flycast . I'm almost annoyed that I bought BeeJive now :/.

I just assumed that jailbreak applications would run in the background ever since Insomnia's code was released. I know MobileChat 2.0 did (albeit it was 3 MB and kept crashing...).

Neither, just search for it in current Cydia.

Only thing I don't like: changes apps that it 'backgrounds' for icon to a square, ugly one.

What square are you referring to? When I use backgrounder for pandora, tuner, simplify or beejive I don't get a square icon. Nothing changes except that it runs in the background while you are doing other stuff.

Note the beehive icon at bottom-left. It took awhile to kick in.

I hope Apple never official allows background processes...it would be a nightmare.

There would be no reason for them to. Push covers all the notification applications. If they upgraded push to single request streaming, then that covers the radio applications which then would be about 90% of App Store.

Course that leaves out the stuff they can't cover like iTrail, etc...

I still got a question, in AIM(computer), I signed on to my other SN, and it says that the SN that is linked to my iPhone is online, but when I IMed it it didn't give me a notification or anything on my iPhone, then when I clicked on the AIM app it THEN gave me the IM..how do I get it to give me a notification?

How do I stay online on AIM and be able to get messages?

it says that I'm still online, but I can't receive message notifications

This sounds awesome, especially for something like Beejive...but just like StatusNotifier, it would be hell on battery life...so i think i'll stay away for now

Do let us know though 1) how the battery life is and 2) if apps run even with the screen locked...
