i havent been jailbreak for that long and i have got a problem.
for some reason, my wifi just toggles off and then goes to 3g which then just drops to that little circle and is extremely slow.

How do i unjailbreak? would it be restore from backup? or restore then restore from backup?

I believe you would just connect to iTunes and use restore.

You should be able to restore a jailbroken backup to a vanilla iPhone.

It would probably be worth unhiding any hidden apps; deleting any non-app store apps and then taking a back-up through iTunes.

i dont quite understand?
what do you mean a vanilla iphone? cant i just restore then restore from backup?

how can i restore it and get rid of the jailbreak without losing my apps and contacts?

Please listen to the answers provided in the thread instead of repeatedly bumping it.

Plug in the iPhone and sync it to make sure you have a current backup. Then choose to restore (the firmware) it to factory settings from in iTunes. Then you can right click it and restore the backup (of the contents) from the backup. The term restore is used for both actions, but they are two separate actions.

A backup of a jailbreaked phone can be restored onto a non-jailbreak firmware. That's not an issue (I did it when I upgraded to 2.1). All jailbreak apps and features will be gone, but all App Store apps, contacts, settings, etc, will be preserved.

Im not bumping them, i asked what a vanilla iphone is and i get no reply.
but thanks for your post. its helped

Oh, sorry, I understand what you're asking now. In this context, a "vanilla" iPhone basically just means an iPhone that has the standard (not jailbreaked, not unlocked, etc) firmware from Apple.

i just restored it all and everything but i still have the carrier logo as my name as i used MIM. how can i get rid of that? and i still think i have a problem with the wifi ? like the wifi icon is on then when i click safari it switches to 3g then straight after that it switches to the circle.? and i cant connect to my iphone with winSCP is that because its not jailbroken anymore?

I'm not sure about the carrier but I would think that the phone would need to be set up as a new phone since your backup has the carrier changed. You can't use winscp on a non jailbroken phone.

another noob question.

my 3g is jailbroken but not to the most recent firmware. when i hit restore it says "restore and update" it looks as if its going to update it before it restores. Im really paranoid that it will brick it if i continue.

Help please.

then i would loose my contacts wont i?

Not if they're on your computer. When you choose to set up as a new phone, you tell iTunes to sync contacts, calendars and email accounts.

You will lose your SMS messages, notes and some app-store data, though.

When I wrote:

I should maybe have been more general in my advice. I meant that you should configure your phone as close as possible to Apple's standard (or the configuration that you're seeking) and then take a back-up, so that after restoring your firmware through iTunes, you can restore your backed-up data.

What happens if i undo the jailbreak?

I'm new to this iphone stuff but here's my problem. My dad brought himself the iphone 3gs last year and took it to some guy to have it jailbroke in order to use a Swiss ( where he was living at the time) pay as you go sim in it. Due to this jailbreak the phone can not be turned off else all the data is lost.
I was given this phone recently and am currently using it on a pay as you go sim in England.
I was wondering if there is any way to reverse this so i can turn my phone on and off without losing data and i am also having problems with the push notifications and cant use apps that i would like to.
Is there any way that I can fix this problem ? The same guy that jailbroke it says no but i was wondering if anyone else can help.
Thanks x

First off, you should probably start a new thread instead of posting to a 2 year old thread, it'll help get your question answered faster.

Second, this sounds VERY shady for some reason...can't turn off your phone or you will lose all your data??? That's a flat out lie. Is this person trustworthy??

Firstly, What firmware on you on?

Firmware is 3.1.2
It was a phone unlocking shop who we have been before, he explained the risks but it was a case of needing the phone there and then. I have made the mistake of letting it run out of battery which does indeed loose everything and i then need to plug it back into blackrain and put all my details back onto the iphone.
I took it to a shop in london to see if there was the technology to fix my problem but they were all acting shady and wanted me to leave the iphone there for the whole day however due to lack of time and trust this was not a possibility.

Also i have posted a new thread but there is no answers yet, I am also new to this forum stuff.
thankyou

Did u download tiny umbrella? This saves all your SHS files so when you restore if iTunes wont let your phone do a restore you can still save your phone and kick your phone out of recovery mode. I've done it twice and both times iTunes kept giving me an error. Let me know if that helps?

if you restore it will make you update and you will lose your jailbreak. thats all that will happen.

it sounds like he has a tethered jailbreak

what do I do if all I get is the black screen with the circle going around (like its trying to shut down) but cannot do anything else??
