MS Word file menu problem

MS Word preferences lets me choose how many (up to 9) recent files will be listed in the File menu for one-click opening. This convenience worked fine until last week. Now, suddenly, I can't get any of the files I open to "stick" to this list. i don't know what I changed, and can't fix it. The help menu offers no suggestions. Any tips are much appreciated.
