Name the one designer that inspires you the most

For me, I would say David Carson. I grew up reading Ray Gun magazine. His style withstood the test of time and continues to be fresh and controversial. Always experimental and exciting, it's his work that keeps me interested in design.
 
No one designer - but, I've always loved work by the Partners and Pentagram. There's a book that features a lot of the Partners work - A Smile in the Mind

Um. Wow. Gonna disagree here.

The only way I know how to describe Mr. Carson would result in a post that is primarily composed of asterisks. While I can't deny the man singlehandedly changed typography as we know it - even if he did fall bass-ackwards into it - he hasn't done much since the mid 1990s. The concepts I see from him today look about the same as they did ten years ago. Design has kept moving. He hasn't.

Full disclosure - I tangentially worked with him on a project once. Not something I'd recommend.

My background isn't in design per se. It's in art. With that in mind, I have to say two of my greatest influences are Piet Mondrian and Jackson Pollack.
 
None of them, I hate them all. Especially the ones who are better than me. Which is most of them.
 
I couldn't name just one...

I love everything that is design related...and like to find current designers that take something from simple to amazing.

Here's a designer that I recently stumbled across...and shortly after saw some of his stuff in different magazines.

Enjoy going through all of his stuff...my favorite is his Havaianas Trail campaign. (That is what I ended up seeing as an ad in several magazines)

I totally agree with you in that he hasn't done much since the 90s. But every time I look at his layouts in Ray Gun, it's just beautiful. I'm more into fine arts as well, Kurt Schwitters, Anne Hamilton, Robert Gober, Warhol, Rothko...etc. Too bad some of the best artists are douches, and good thing I never met him.
 
Note I am more product design than graphics so my inspiration is going to come from different areas.

Probably quite mainstream in terms of designers but I've always liked the work of Jean Paul Gautier and Phillippe Starck, not just because of the designs but the ethos behind their work, they design things that they like and most people probably do like but wouldn't necessarily wear/use as they would feel a tad out of their comfort zone. You can usually tell a JPG or PS design in most circumstances too.

I've also like Charles/Ray Eames furniture too.

Now if I go into graphic areas I quite like the anime styles which are coming through now (not so keen on the older styles) and in the last few years. I couldn't give you one designer here as usually its more than one person involved. 🙂

But I have to say, since he guest lectured when I was at uni, I've always had a thing for (not like that) Bob Gill.

There is certainly something to be said for a minimalist approach to design. There's a common misperception that it's easy. What most people don't realize is that in minimalism, the few elements that exist each carry more weight and are of much more significance.

The way Ive is able to create these beuatiful, simplistic, forms - and, for that matter - the way Apple is able to achieve a balance between form and function has always been a source of inspiration for me. And, I hate to say it, but it's a source that I often take for granted.
