Apple Document Confirms MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)

Apple has published a support document (PDF) specifically for the "MacBook/MacBook Pro (Late 2008)" models. Besides the name, the document is not especially revealing. It appears to be a service document when replacing the display on the new MacBooks.

Documentation is the best. Hopefully we can upgrade more hardware ourselves.

Very strange for them to release a support document without releasing the actual computers though

Could this be called the "Most Leaked" Apple event in history?

Anyways... AWESOME!

I think Apple have stopped caring about product leaks.

So the next AirPort card will be placed in the display assembly?

No more standard-sized miniPCI-E AirPort cards?

The G5 had to be most (well, biggest) leak.
It appeared in the online store a few days before release

I thought the G4 iMac was the biggest leak as it ended up on the front page of Time magazine before it was released.

I remember that day. It was before I was registered on Macrumors, however I was able to click through and see it personally. Apple did this only four days before the unveiling, and it was called "Premature specification" by one of Apple's marketing folks, and was quoted by Steve during his keynote!

Good times

Not quite, we have pics of actual assembled Nano's before the event last month, while we do have cases images for these macbooks we havent seen one assembled ready for use yet! or any specs at all, the nanos we knew 8 and 16 from the image leeks too. but hey there are still two days before the event. We still an all likelihood may see one, which i can't wait for!

Which means everyone will carp about how lame the new models are, just as they did with the iPods.

Not really, probably just a genuine mistake.

The MacBook Air probably has very different internals, whereas from this document we can guess that the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros will share at least some similar internals.

This new airport looks like it might share the USB bus with the web camera which is a few pins in the display cable. Should be enough bandwidth for wifi speeds to be unaffected when the camera is on so prob not an issue.

I wouldn't be bothered if the WiFi interface was on a dedicated USB port but sharing with a video camera is just asking for trouble in my mind. One or the other is going to get compromised!

That being said I'm wondering if Apple might run a PCI Express "slot" up there. More so I'm sitting here wondering why I'm even bothering to wonder about this as the debut is only two days away.

Early vs. Late 2008 & Nvidia failures

So this sort of defines "early 2008" vs. "late 2008" MBP with respect to the Nvidia GPU failures (to this point I though early 2008 might mean something else such as Jan, Feb + Mar production runs).

So we now know that every MBP produced in 2008 (if I read the Apple tech release right) has the GPU with the packaging defect.

Apple continued to used the Nvidia cards AFTER Nvidia's July announcement of taking a $200mm reserve against GPU failures.

Apple simply took Nvidia's word that MBP were not affected -- despite tons of evidence from the Mac community even before Nvidia's July action that there was a problem. (I also think Apple already had hard data internally about this, but we'd never know about that.)

Wow -- totally screwed, and I know now why Apple will not provide warranty coverage for the GPU failure beyond the 1 additional year.

Epic failure and potentially fraudulent behavior. Certainly by Nvidida, and Apple looks complicit also by not trying to be proactive.

Hopefully a means to ensure GPU failure comes about. Apple deserves to have this come back to haunt them.

Keep in mind the antennas for wifi are on the left and right side of the macbook screens. Obviously those have to be connected to the NIC to operate.
