Apple's U.S. Market Share Approaches 10%
![]() Gartner has published a preliminary report on U.S. and worldwide PC shipments for the third quarter of 2008. The report pegs Apple's share of quarterly U.S. PC shipments at 9.5%, up from 7.7% in the third quarter of 2007. Apple's U.S. shipments increased 29.4% year-over-year, far outpacing the total industry shipment growth of 4.6%. ![]() Gartner's Preliminary U.S. PC Vendor Unit Shipment Estimates for 3Q08 Apple traditionally demonstrates particularly solid performance in the back-to-school third quarter due to their strong presence in the education market. While this typically results in a drop in market share for the fourth quarter of each calendar year, Apple's overall trend is clearly positive. ![]() Apple's U.S. Market Share Trend: 1Q06-3Q08 (Gartner) Despite continued strong performance in the U.S. market, Apple has yet to crack the top five vendors for worldwide shipments. Toshiba continues to hold the fifth spot with a 4.6% market share in a worldwide PC market that experienced 15% growth in shipments year-over-year. This is good news! Apple continues to increase in sales numbers and with the new notebooks, they should do even better.

The new $999 price point should help sales in the holiday quarter.
I don't think Vista and Windows 7 will give people much pause when deciding on a new machine!

This is weird. I was just about to post a question asking what Apple's marketshare is because it was shown in the keynote today that Apple shipped 17.6% of all units in computer sales.

Now if only Apple stock would go up a little... then we could all be happy.

While today's updated Macs won't have the "ew, it's Windows Vista!" affect, I think some bad moves may cost them sales. A lot of negative chatter about the new Macs.
Here's hoping...

Once again, Apple accounts for nearly half (49%) of the year-over-year unit growth in the PC industry overall. Another way to look at it, the Windows PC unit growth was only 2.6% compared to Apple's 29.4% during the period. I think this tells the story so much more accurately than market share or rank.

![]() AUD is ****ed... but it'll come back, and with Apple's history, the prices won't change until next revision. |

Apple should just shut down and return the money to the shareholders.

I hope next quarter they help save the U.S. economy. Maybe they should sell clothes, cars, boats, groceries, beer, and day care services.

anyone know why it spikes every Q3?
looks like it spikes every Q3 so if it follows the same pattern their Q4 should be slightly down from this latest number.
Anyone know why this is? I suppose Q4 has historically seen a larger jump in PC sales than Mac sales for the holiday season . . . |

![]() Education has long been a strong market for Apple, so they always do well in the back-to-school buying season of July-September.

Apple will never have a large market share and I'm pretty sure Apple does not want it either. The biggest segment of the market is the low end. Apple purposely ignore this large segment of the market. Look at the figure Apple displayed on today's press event. While their market share as low two digits their revenue share was something like 35%. What this means is that when Dell or HP sell a notebook they make some money but Apple makes three times as much on every sale.
Apple seems to be making about as much money as HP or Dell but Apple does this while selling only a third as many notebook computers. |

Erm, Apple does want a bigger market, as big as possible really - but agreed, the lower end is what sustains Microsoft's licence sales - if only Apple would go that way really so I wouldn't have to contend with their hardware. Not that's bad, cheaper would be nicer though. So tempted by a custom-build desktop next time.

Do we want Apple to get a bigger market share?
I want Apple to exceed But I'm afraid if they do gain a bigger market share then we will become more of a target for malware and viruses. I like the absence of virus protection on my mac. I can go any were on the web. Download anything and everything. With out a care in the world.

Someone tell me what to do!
I just got a white macbook 2.4 ghz last week I can return it for $50 and get the 2.0 ghz base model. Is it worth it? Will it be slower? How do the bus speeds compare and how is 2.0 faster than 2.4 given the faster bus. I don't get it. |

Well I believe it is good that they are increasing in market share. 1992 when I was using my Classic II to do my studies in high school all my friends had PC's and my school didn't even support Mac's.
Hope that they continue and bring out even better new stuff at MWSF! |

With pricing like this, I hope Apple see a more dramatic fall this Q4.
