when you buy a mac, why does it offer you the option to add an apple remote?
When I bought my iMac it came with one without paying extra.
Is this no longer the case or is it the option to have an additional one?

Apple has gotten greedy and no longer include any accessories with computers. They are all a la carte. No VGA adapter, no remote, no nothing in the box except your computer, battery, power brick, startup guide and OS X DVD.
 
gutted.
I don't know how much I'll use it..
I already have one for my imac so I use that for music.
If the situation arose that I want to use my existing remote with my new macbook, how would I change which it is synced to? If that's how it works...
 
hmm.
i noticed in this picture:

that there is an apple remote in the box so I'm tempted to believe they still come with remotes as standard.

That's a comparison shot between the packaging of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro and the older Pro. That one did come with an Apple Remote. It's fun to use sometimes, but really not very useful at all. I got one with the Universal Dock I got for my iPod and got one with my iMac, so I've got two. One is still in plastic. It's fun, but far from necessary.
