This is a normal disk scan that the iPod performs when it feels it's necessary. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60943 Apple has a lot this basic information on there support site though if you want more detailed user end information I find that www.ipodlounge.com is the place to go for any and all iPod questions.
