Have to return 1st gen to APPLE. what is the best way to restore

Have to get it back to Out of the box,. what is my best way to do this so it is completely clean?

even if it has been jailbroken restoring with iTunes and then setting as a new phone should suffice

Yup. Restore through iTunes. That's all it takes.

DFU restore should work...take out ANY traces...just don't restore from backup

Absolutely. Just a typical restore may leave some evidence (if they choose to look for it).
