Can anyone recommend a very silent external HDD? The more storage space, the better. It'll be plugged into my Mac Mini, so either USB or Firewire are fine.

Thanks. 🙂

I was pleasantly surprised with the 500GB Maxtor OneTouch 4. It's quiet and it spins down properly into sleep mode.

We have 3 Seagate FreeAgents and they are totally silent! The only way you know they are even on is the orange strip that glows. Also sleep properly when the computer sleeps.

I concur with this. The Seagate drives run very quietly, and have given me zero problems. The WD MyBooks are also pretty quiet, but not silent, and I had a couple of failures with them.
