extending wireless signal with airport express?

I am about to replace my very very old router with an Airport Extreme. I also just realized that there are some rooms in my house that are too far away from the router and I get a very weak wireless signal.

Can I use the Airport Express to extend the wirless signal coming from the Extreme?

How does this work?

Well, i dont know how to set it up, but i can tell you how it works, and that it works.
it takes the signal, and sends it off just like it recives it,
