Apple Seeds Snow Leopard 10A190 (Mac OX 10.6) to Developers

Apple has seeded a new version of Snow Leopard (Build 10A190) to developers this morning. Last night they had emailed ADC members that a preview build of Snow Leopard was made available to them, but the download links were not live until this morning.

Snow Leopard is the codename for the next major revision of Mac OS X. Apple has said that they would be focusing on quality and performance in Snow Leopard. In particular, Apple has made it clear that there will be efforts to improve support for multi-core processors and GPU processing. These improvements will help developers more efficiently use these capabilities that already ship in Macs.

Anyone testing this yet? 8GB ram? GPU switching on the fly?

Ah the perks of ADC...;-)

I'm really looking forward to seeing how much this will improve the usage of my processors... and maybe even things having to do with something Blu?

Shot in the dark, but does anyone have a good guesstimate when 10.6 will be released?

Total guess: 7-8 months? That would make it 18 months after Leopard was released.

I agree with this, January is too early for a stable release in my opinion, but June (WWDC) pins it about right.

Thanks for the update.

Looking forward to seeing what developers find after having some time to dig into it. The 8gb support question is obviously going to be on many people's mind (for both generation MBP), as well as possible enabling on the fly switching of GPUs on the fly.

Hmmm? Then that would indicate Snow Leopard debuting in the Summer. Maybe it should be called Summer Leopard then?

“About a year” from WWDC this year (which was in June).

There were rumours before Apple officially announced Snow Leopard that the release would be much sooner — early 2009, as soon as January.

Apple is unlikely to announce their ship date following their slightly embarrassing public back track on the Leopard ship date. That's not to say they don't have a date — I suspect, as usual, Apple are working to an ambitious schedule.

Quote from http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/

Quote:
To accommodate the enormous amounts of memory being added to advanced hardware, Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM — up to a theoretical 16TB, or 500 times more than what is possible today. More RAM makes applications run faster, because more of their data can be kept in the very fast physical RAM instead of on the much slower hard disk.

WebKit nightlies don't even require that.

Safari could not open the page “https://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/We...71DOTo0ss/0.0” because the server is not responding.

Actually I can't wait for the Mac Pro get boosted!
Any idea about when it will happen?

Can't imagine what it'd be able to do with multiple CPUs and multiple GPUs (knowing that it already is so powerful)!

I'm the proud owner of the first Intel iMac, from Jan 2006. We're going on 3 years now and I couldn't be happier.

Given that you usually buy a new computer every 3-4 years, I think I know when I'll get a new one. The next iMac I buy will be quad-core and come with Snow Leopard pre-installed.

I have the second-to-last iMac G5, and this is exactly what I am waiting for. And I really hope I can get it late next year. 10.6 will be a given by then, I just hope the quad-core Clarksfields are.
