The 2008-003 update blocked out my AirPort on both ethernet and wireless unless I turned off the OS X firewall. How that ever made it out the door is beyond me....pity testing on Apple's behalf.
Good news is the 2008-004 update has fixed it all, and everything is in working order again.

This is the first time I've ever done a "wait and see" with an Apple update. Thankfully I read the comments before I installed this.
Thanks for the update on this update's working-ness. |

Airport Extreme Update 2008-003...
...doesn't seem to have done anything. After I installed Update-003 I was getting 2 bars or less, and I thought it was my router. So, I went into the router several times, and changed wireless channels. That worked for a few minutes, but then it went back to two bars. I installed Airport Extreme Update 2008-004 and it seems to have solved my issues. Also, something worth mentioning is that I raised the transmit power on the router from 70 to 100 mW. The router is only about 45-50 feet away from where I use my laptop too...
Am I guessing right when I say that this update targets people with Broadcom chipsets? My brother has the MacBook from mid-2007 (2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo white), whereas mine is from late 2007 (2.2 GHz "Santa Rosa" White) and he's never had these problems. I believe those machines use the Atheros chipset. (To double-check my assumption I just went to check my brother's System Profiler, but it doesn't seem to be labeled as to what chipset he's got. Then again, he's not fully updated (he's running on 10.5.2, and who knows what other stuff needs updating.). With all that said, I seem to be running fine now, but if anything messes up I'll be sure to report back here to everyone.

Apple no bakayarou-tachi! EDIT: I was just reading about this same thing on TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) and someone points out that after installing Airport Extreme Update 2008-003, Network Utility did not display the model as "Wireless Network Adaptor 802.11 a/b/g/n". After installing this update it shows that once again. <3 Apple. They do mess up sometimes, but they realize their mistakes, and they fix it in a week or less, unlike "the other company".

This update replaces the firmware of the AirPort Extreme card on my MacBook Pro (Mid-2007).

Have you tried rebooting, even after the initial reboot for the install completion?
As far as I can remember I've never had a failed update. 003 caused my WiFi to go wonky, but it still worked.

But you are right, a restart fixed this issue, it seems. I normally go through a process before I try and fix a problem: 1) Visit console (in this case, I had a strange error: 26/10/08 1:55:37 PM configd[34] Error: get APPLE80211_IOC_POWERSAVE failed, -4 (Operation not supported) , which popped up every minute exactly) 2) Google any errors. (this error brought me to an apple.discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread....sageID=8346031 , interestingly it was related to issues with the Airport update 2008-003) It suggested to delete some system preferences and reboot in safe mode) 3) repair permissions 4) log out, and back in 5) restart This got me going again, though I have this error in the log: 26/10/08 2:12:08 PM mDNSResponder[21] Note: Frequent transitions for interface en1 (FE80:0000:0000:0000:021E:C2FF:FEBA:435A); network traffic reduction measures in effect Not sure what this is, but since I'm ok, I guess I can leave it. I normally do the above steps before attempting any serious fix. I guess I'm lucky it worked for me until here. |

updated without a problem, connecting just fine. No noticeable difference of any sort, but here's one more user that is fine, for those that are doubtful after 2008-003

wireless just dropped out recently even with this update. or it might've been my dying router.

I have a lot of problems with my connection at school (I'm assuming because it is a large Wi-Fi network) so here's to hoping this update will fix it!
![]() I installed it but haven't been able to see if has improved anything because I'm not at school at the moment. Otherwise, everything seems normal.

I'm still having random wifi bars. I'm beginning to think that it's either a 2.4 GHz band interference problem, or somehow I have to strengthen the router's output of the signal. I may upgrade it's firmware to the next level up, or try a completely different firmware or something. Eventually the bars recover to full, but it's getting annoying. I'm gonna try a router reboot now to see if it helps.
