MacBook Airs Arrive, Unboxing Photos

The new version of the MacBook Air has arrived and one reader has posted unboxing photos to Flickr. Another forum member has also received the latest MacBook Air.

Apple revised the MacBook Air during their October 14th media event. The new model features the NVIDIA chipset and integrated graphics card. This should provide the MacBook Air with substantially better graphics performance over the first generation model.

A couple of early XBench benchmarcks have been posted here and here, showing off the new 128GB SSD drive. Comparison scores can be found at Xbench. Further discussion can also be followed in our MacBook Air forum.

Wait...if those pictures are legit, you're telling me that the MBA still has a trackpad with a click button? Why would the new MBs and MBPs lose the button but the Air keep it?

Yes, it still has a button on the trackpad. You can go look at the pictures on Apple's website.

Come on American consumer....do what you do best, thoughtless shopping.

LAME!!!! what a worthless Apple product. Why even make a big deal of this machine. Half the balls, twice the cost of a MacBook and the weight/thickness is not really that big of a difference.

Educated you must be on this gen 2 Air.

Go read some benchmarks and come back here and eat some of your own words. Better yet go benchmark it with yours, and compare your screen with it while your at it.

I want one. But until it gets the new glass trackpad, I'll hold off. I'm trying desperately to save some money this holiday season until after MWSF. I'm hoping for something new and exciting to be announced there.

I need to get myself a notebook soon, but I just cant' decide between a macbook and a macbook air. I think maybe the normal macbook because I can expand it to 4gb or ram and thats always nice.

Dude, you should call Apple. I ordered my MacBook Pro the day of the keynote and got it Friday that week... I did pay the $17 for "next-day" shipping which Apple promptly refunded after I called and pointed out it shipped Tuesday and didn't arrive until Friday.

I was at Best Buy the other day and they had the new Macbooks....I have to say the size and weight difference between the Air and the vanilla arent worth the increase in price to me for the Air. Plus that new trackpad ROCKS. I love the expose gestures, heck i use that functionality all the time on my Mac Pro and I have a 30" cinema display.

That said, the benchmarks on the new Airs are pretty nice. No slouch of a machine in a small package if you can afford it ($900 extra).

Does the new glass trackpad require Apple to redesign the cases and so Apple doesn't want it to get the glass trackpad just yet? Or does the glass trackpad require a thicker casing which the Air doesn't have?

How does the display look in comparison to the unibody MacBooks? There have been alot of comparisons between the displays of the unibody MB and the old MBA that indicate the MBA's display is much better. Is that still true?

Well I doubt anyone here is a mechanical engineer for Apple, so you will only get answers based on speculation.

With that said, I would assume that the differences needed are significant enough that they would need to do a minor case update, and decided against it.

I wonder, won't the better NVIDIA-chipset and increased amount of hard-drive space decrease the battery life? If I want a MacBook Air, battery life would be the most important part for me. Although it weights less and is thinner, I don't see why the MacBook Air is a better choice than the new MacBook.

Why is the box larger? I thought they are trying to be more environmentally friendly...
