QTconvert, convert Quicktime file formats. Even Protected AA...

Of course, we all knew it would just be a matter of time. Now if only I had some protected AACs to try it with...
 
This has been useful in the past few days for using some of my protected AAC files as temp tracks for some videos i'm doing. In the past few months i've been burning CDs and copying the AIFFs from there, but this eliminates a step and makes for a quicker turnaround. Alot of stuff I edit I like to see set against certain types of music (some of which was purchased through iTMS) and this makes it that much easier to do.
 
I haven't looked at it... but I would guess it's doing what Toast et al do.

exporting... so there is a "reencoding" loss.

Someone needs to come up with an app that converts to some lossless format. Anyone know whether it's possible to make a lossless MP3?
 
I think the guy said he was using the QT API. I wonder if Apple will sick their team of lawyers on this guy for using the API. I remember a guy used the iTunes API for file sharing, and Apple took action then.

AIFF is a "lossless" format.

The issue is that all AAC's are already "lossy"... they've already been compressed... so pulling out the sound data into an AIFF is no more lossy than just listening to an AAC... but no one keeps their songs in AIFF format since it's so big... so you'd have to re-compress it to mp3 or aac again.... so you loose more information.

i have used one of my first music apps to convert m4p to m4a.
im not going to make an app for it, or a tutorial on it because i don't need apple legal on my tail.

but it can and has been done with only 2 programs with i think on a little loss that's not noticeable to most people.
 
Author of the software here. A couple of things. First, I intended this for folks who don't have an iPod but still want to listen to their tunes on the portable player of their choice. I'm simply making an already possible process more expeditious. I don't condone illegal music sharing though I do understand that QTConvert will likely make it easier to do so. Still, lacking QTConvert, there are other options available to such folks.

Second, I've also created an MP3 QuickTime export component. Although it does work, it is alpha quality, lacking certain features (like the ability to specify anything other than the default LAME preset bit rate during encoding), but it definitely works. Check out the Version Tracker links for more info.

For the record, I haven't yet been contacted by Apple legal. If I am, my response will likely depend on their approach and stated goals.

You're right about the installer. I've been a bit busy lately but that is something I definitely want to address, especially now I've released the MP3 QuickTime exporter. Too much copying to and fro, even for my tastes...what am I saying, especially for my tastes.

I don't see why Apple would be really upset with this program, since iTunes allows the same thing with the use of a scratch disc.

With the stream sharing thing, did Apple lean on sites like iTuneshare, or was its response limited to the restrictions built into the 4.0.1 update?

You might want to look into LAME MP3 encoding ... here

heh...funny you mention LAME MP3 encoding. You'll also need to grab the LAME Framework that I put together. It's all still in development, but it is functional.
