Is there anything other than iPartition (can't afford to spend $50) that can non-destructively partition my external drive? I already have files on it that I don't want to lose.

Also, I formerly had Ubuntu installed and deleted it. Disk Utility was not able to merge the partitions back together. I used a Gparted live CD to remove the ubuntu partitions, but disk utility can't extend my current partition to fill the extra space and gparted can't do hfs+. so basically i have 10 GB of free space sitting on my external drive that I really want to go back on the main partition.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I know how to do that. But Disk Utility fails:

Try selecting the disk and click repair disks. If this doesn't work you can try booking from the DVD and run disk utility and repair disks. After repairing the disks try expanding the partition again.

The disk won't verify, so it won't let me repair either.

It says invalid volume file count...

Since the volume file count is an essential part of a correct directory structure, it is probably a very good thing that the partition remapping will not work!

It sound like a trip to Disk Warrior land is in order to straighten out the directory first, or if you hopefully have a full backup of the volume then a erase and restore re-establish the directory structure correctly, at which point the repartition should work fine.

If you do not have a backup of the volume, you may have mixed results trying to back it up now with that error- but it is worth a try.
