Currently have a 750Gb USB drive connected to my MBP which has a 400gb partition on for Time Machine. The rest is movie files for my AppleTV but obviously no backup of these.

Someone said to me yesterday that if I had a Time Capsule (1TB) and had the USB drive connected to my MBP then the TC would backup both my MBP and the USB drive. Is this true?

Would be ideal for me as I could then have the movies on the USB drive backed up by TC as well.

Yes, Time Machine can back up external drives.

However, external drives are excluded from Time Machine by default.

To correct this, open Time Machine and remove the drive that you want to back up from the excluded list.
