Apple's Fiscal 2008 Results Show Significant Year-Over-Year Growth
![]() On Wednesday, Apple released its annual 10-K reports which detailed revenue and spending for fiscal 2008. eWeek has kindly organized the information into a number of charts, including this one showing Apple's revenue growth over 2007: ![]() Other graphs show growth in both Apple's desktops and portables by 37-38%. Even greater levels of growth can be seen across international markets as well. The results should come as no great surprise, as Apple has been reporting record breaking quarterly results throughout the year. Apple's research and development costs have increased proportionally to their revenue and remains about 3.4% of net sales at $1.1 billion in 2008. the iPod Revenue is amazing!
It's also amazing that in a time of financial crisis, apple is "dodging the bullet"

Desktop sales will decrease year on year now, I reckon things are moving much more portable.

Holy Hell!
Now that is some serious money!
I wouldn't say that Apple are "dodging the bullet" exactly, but they are providing essential products that everyone wants. Even with people spending less the Apple products will sell, especially with christmas round the corner, these figures will go even higher and quite quickly with the new MB, MBP and the lower price on the iPod Touch too.

Crikey!
I guess that shows just how important the iPod is to Apple. So if the desktop includes the Mini I guess that is why there is no imminent update of it

1.66Bn out of peripherals!!
![]() Also interesting to note that the iPhone only became really profitable this year. Portables must be the highest growing product market for all computer manufacturers... No wonder apple makes such a massive profit, everything is so expensive. |

iPod revenue is still growing.
So much for all the analysts who said the market was saturated.

Wow, I am amazed at how much revenues the peripherals section is. It's almost as big as the iPhone market!

$1.50 of Software and Services? Didn't know piracy was that rampant, or that .Mac was that bad?
The iTS is a powerhouse. $3+ billion on music and movies (and Apps?). I think they should rename that from 'Music' to 'iTunes Store'.

But, when you roll in iPhone sales - which is really an evolution of the ipod - the growth in the two categories is 32%.

one thing that struck me was that the ipod seams to have leveled off suggesting that it has saturated it's market also the iphone has a good bit of growth left seeing that it grew so much
time for apple to release a game console seeing how much it has focussed on gaming lately (they would have to be very tight lipped about it, and if they are they let these leaks accour to cover up a bigger release) very unlikely though

That is quite a commanding revenue from iPods.
I hope it is not due to planned obsolescence, 'cause anecdotally Mac's last longer than PCs, but do iPods last longer than other MP3 players? My original iPod rocked it for 3 years (until a disaster) and my nano has been chugging along nicely for over 3 years now...but I've known quite a few iPod users who are on their 3rd or 4th since the intro of the nano (2005). |

I personally am most surprised / impressed to see that they're making more money in the last two items -- peripherals and services. I knew about everything else, but seeing that they're continuing to grow these two is pretty good stuff. iTunes seems to be retaining its market dominance (it'll be interesting to see if it can slide past Walmart and actually get to #1 in music retail revenues), but there's always the question of the extent to which it makes much money for Apple directly. No breakout for video content -- I'm guessing it's probably in the "Music" category? There's a much bigger question mark for Apple. I'd like to hear if they're actually selling rentals in any decent volume.

That's a good question. It must include the TC, AEBS and AirEx, various iPod accessories and kit, extra keyboards and mice, etc. I wonder if it includes the Apple TV? And I think that Apple probably does get a fair amount of impulse buying of cameras, external HD's, scanners, printers, etc, from people who view the Apple Store as sort of one-stop, low-hassle tech shopping -- the deals may not be as good as Circuit City or Best Buy, but to most people who are shopping at Apple stores, the retail experience will be perceived as much better.

Hopefully this helps the stock market this week as other businesses/retailers are sending in their Fiscal Results in.

Look at the chart again. Desktop sales rose last year by nearly as much as the entire iPhone revenue stream. As long as sales keep increasing, Apple will keep coming out with new models. |

I don't know if desktop sales will decrease because many people still use them. I know I'm thinking about possibly getting a desktop for home even though we have one for my younger siblings. I want one for myself since I hate carrying my macbook everywhere with me. Having a 2nd comp would be a tremendous help. I think there are many others in similar situation unless of course Apple comes out with a powerful enough Mini, then I might just jump on that.

Per Michael Dell's instructions, I'm waiting for Apple to give me my shareholder money back...
Per Steve Ballmer's comment, I'm waiting for the iPhone to go-under...

TV. Seeing as how it's listed as an iPod in the Apple Online Store, I would imagine that's where it's listed.Same with "Music" versus Video. Crafty reporting to hide weaknesses? Becasue you know if "Video" was bringing them billiions, it'd have a category of its own...
