Macbook (black) & my receiver

So i've hooked up my black Macbook to my Receiver and want audio and video I am using a mini dvi-hdmi (for video) and a toslink to 3.5mm for audio but for some reason audio isnt working...does anyone have any suggestions???

Have you turned on digital audio out from the System Preferences Sound pane?
