Looks like the NDA/timeframe for the news release passed (as I got similar news on multiple RSS feeds), but the Parallels guys forgot to update their website

Could I run a CAD package on Parallels, such as Solidworks?

I was told it wasn't possible before.

How will it run CS:S on my original macbook (2.16gh, 2GB Ram) though?
Parralls 3 ran at about 15-20fps at lowest settings.

Parallels 4.0 Promises Significant Performance Improvements

Parallels has announced the immediate availability of Parallels 4.0. Parallels allows Intel-Mac users to run Windows alongside Mac OS X.

The latest update to their Windows-virtualization software for Intel Macs promises new performance, security, backup and power saving features. Performance is said to be "up to 50% faster".
Quote:
Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac introduces support for DirectX 9, DirectX Pixel Shader 2.0 and OpenGL 2.0, providing fast video performance, while the Adaptive Hypervisor dynamically allocates resources to meet user needs. The responsiveness to all applications is further enhanced as the virtualization engine has been optimized to consume 15-30% less resources than previous versions.
This release also finally introduces support for up to 8 way symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) to take advantage of the multi-core CPUs found in all Macs. Other features include:
Quote:
- Improved Windows and Mac integration, True Drag & Drop and Copy & Paste, SmartX Technologies and Built-in Installation and Migration Tools.
- Adaptive Hypervisor, FastLane Architecture, up to 8 way SMP and 8 GB RAM plus 64-bit support for each VM, HyperBus and support for DirectX 9.0, DirectX Pixel Shader 2.0, and OpenGL 2.0.
- Parallels Internet Security powered by Kaspersky, Acronis True Image Home backup and restore, SmartGuard, PowerSaver, Full-hardware ACPI support and Acronis Disk Director Suite disk management.
- eMac OS X Leopard Server and Windows Server OS support, VM Directory, CLI and Scripting support, SDK and API, remote control from iPhone, PXE Boot, improved networking and VM Templates.
Version 4.0 retails for $79.99 and is available as a paid $39.99 upgrade to existing Parallels customers. A free trial is also available.

Update: Parallels is offering a $5 coupon through our affiliate partner.

I think I might actually buy this version. I've used trial versions of the others, but couldn't get myself to purchase it.

I haven't ever used Fusion, but I'm sure once people start downloading the new version, we'll see some comparisons then.

If it really is that much faster, I might have to go for it.

Don't forget Sun's "Virtual Box". It is not as full featured as Fusion or Parallels but Sun has set the price to zero. The price is hard to beat. http://www.virtualbox.org/

I've installed v4 and got Vista 64 running pretty easily, bar the graphics.
Perfomance is 1.0 due to lack of graphics performance.

Not been able to work out how best to resolve this issue.
Any suggestions gratefully revealed.

So far I have started with a fresh install of Vista using the Parallels demo.

2 hrs later its still installing...

Parallels is a C**P fest. Fusion at least has a stable install.

Edit - I had to stop Parallels and quit it from OS X and restart the boot process now it seems to work now to test some of my stuff. Ok back again.... I cannot get the Audio working so without that working apps wont launch.... Ah the joys of testing clearly still beta software...

Upgraded from 3.0 to 4.0

MacBook Pro 2.4/4GB RAM

Quick, painless, easy! I only had to enter the 4.0 activation code. It installed rather quickly. Updated/Converted XP and Vista without a hitch! I'll check back to give my views on any speed improvements!

In the meantime... I'm a VERY satisfied 4.0 users!

Upgrade P3 to P4 Network settings need reset?

I'm on the fence post about upgrading from P3 to P4.
I have the standard XP Pro install, all I use it for is Access and Coldfusion. When you run the upgrade does it retain network settings? I'm happy with P3 but as I understand with P4 you can set it so it doesn't try to connect with your ipod or iphone when you plug it in to sync. I'm hesitant to upgrade because of all the horror stories over on the parallels forums, of course the only people that post there are the ones that have problems and it just isn't worth it if I have to change all of my settings
