iTunes and speaker balance

I looked all over for a balance control within iTunes and couldn't find one. I adjusted the balance in the Sound module of System Preferences. Is there a way to have a balance control on the dock. I also like the equalizer sound presets, but they only work with iTunes and music played from iTunes library. The reason I ask is that I plug my iPod Shuffle into the input jack of my speakers but I then have to open the sound module to balance which sometimes changes with different music. Am I asking to much?
