Hey guys I'm thinking about upgrading my 2.4ghz 250gb hdd to the new WD 10000rpm hdd but was wondering about a couple of things?

1. Will it fit without the hdd enclosure that the drive come with?

2. Will there be heat issues?

Thanks in advance

Doubtful it will fit.

Compare with the Scorpio Black (which is designed for laptops).

You'll notice that the VelociRaptor is 15mm high, compared to 9.5mm for the Scorpio. The "enclosure" (more of an adaptor really) is designed to change it from a 2.5" drive to fit into a 3.5" bay adds more to the height of the drive (edit: if you look at the spec sheet from the one without the adaptor and compare it to the one with at 26.1mm).

You *INSTANTLY* void the warranty if you remove the "Iceberg" from it. I'm guessing it would cook itself even if it fit.

Uses about 2.5x more power during read/write too.

While this would be nothing short of amazing if it did fit (and believe me, a thread like this would have hit hundreds of replies here already if it were possible to put such a drive in a MB/P), you're far better off finding a suitable external box to put this with, since you won't stray far from a power point.

Seagate's new 500gig 7200rpm drives are due out soon, they might be worth a look at.

The noise and vibration of 10K rpm HDD may not be most ideal for laptops. I think the larger capacity SSD would be more realistic.
