why would you want to do that?? the sound is a hardware test being completed successfully.

Sometimes people don't like to "chime" in class when they start up for example

if your volume is down you wont hear the sound. i just realized this the other day. i thought my machine wasnt passing the hardware test. 😉

You can also always plug headphones in so you don't have to remember to mute it or turn the volume down before shutting it down.

Nope, plugging the headphones won't help.. doesn't work on my white macbook at least.

The internal speaker volume needs to be muted in order to mute the startup chime. If the headphones volume was muted but not the speakers, the startup chime will sound when you restart.
