How can I install "Classic" 9.2 over Tiger?

Hi Guys,
Sorry about the title not being very clear. What I mean is that I have a Mac that is already quite happily running Tiger (with all the updates) but I'd very much like to install Mac OS 9.2.1 "Classic" so that when I put an old game CD in the drive, the eMac recognises the fact that it is an older game and fires it up in Classic mode.
Can it be done without wiping Tiger off my Mac and starting fron scratch?

E-Maculation is a good place to start. They also run forums for support questions.

Steve - I regularly run OS 9 games and apps within Tiger on my eMac. All I get is the warning (advice?) about "Classic is starting". You should, in theory, be able to do anything with OS 9 stuff, bar booting into OS 9, within Tiger.

HOWEVER - as a precaution I have, as you can see, in my PPC G3 b/w, a second hard drive which is OS 9 specific, incl boot function. That option is not available to you with your eMac, but it could be via an external hard drive connected with firewire. Just a thought.
 
Here's what you need! I stumbled across this when researching a guy's Classic problem a while back and it turns out to be perfect for you too.

If you go to The Classic Environment, the author of "Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger: Visual Quickstart Guide" has put her Chapter 18 on Classic into the public domain. It is a great 21 page read on the whole subject of installing OS9, configuring and all the rest in conjunction with Tiger.

Look about midway down the page to find the download link which is on a line that reads "So here’s Chapter 18: The Classic Environment. Enjoy!"

That should help out quite a bit! :)
 
If you boot from the Tiger CD/DVD, there is an option to install Classic. Does this not appear for you?
 
If your Mac came with OS X, just put your "additional software" disc that came with your Mac and run "Install Additional Software." That's it. You don't need to buy 9.2 install discs, you don't need to have a Mac that boots OS 9, or reformat or partition hard drives, none of that.

I had a look at the E-Maculation forum and have to ask, "Are those folk from this planet?" they seem to be speaking a language I have never come across before. Words such as Basilisk II. FUSION, SoftMac, vMac and Executor.

That Tiger/Classic support is one to browse later.

Trip & Eric ... That works. I would never have thought to instal 9.2 by putting my Tiger install DVD in the drive. Apple and the Big Guy work in mysterious ways. :)
 
I just checked to confirm one thing regarding using the Tiger install disks that Trip and Eric mentioned that you might want to keep in mind.

If you have a retail Tiger installation disk (black) it is going to be no joy for you as it does not have the OS9 install files on it. :(

BUT- if you are using the Software Restore disks (grey) that came with your Mac the location of the OS9 installer will either be in the "Restore Software" installer on the first disk if your Mac originally shipped with both OSX and OS9 installed, and under "Install Additional Software" as Eric mentioned (or "Install Optional Software") on the second disk of your restore set if your Mac is a later model that originally came with only OSX pre-installed.

If your Mac was of the first variety (that came pre-installed with both OSX and OS9), then see page 5 of my link above for simple step by step illustrated installation instructions.

Good luck with it at any rate- just didn't want you to go crazy trying to find the files on a retail installer disk! :)
 
Heh. The E-Maculation forums are not what you are looking for. SheepShaver (and Basilisk II, etc) are all emulators. They can work as alternatives to classic. Which is good for some people, but you're not really looking for that...

If you have a machine with OS 9 on it, you should be able to drag and drop all the files Classic needs.

If the OS 9 version is new enough, it'll give the "Classic needs to install files" warning and then install the OS9Classic file in the System Folder.

However, if you want to reboot into OS 9, you should be able to do it as long as you checked "Install OS 9 Drivers" when you formatted the drive last.

Without this it won't recognize OS 9 as a bootable System Folder.

Now if you only had Classic, then there was a file(s) somewhere that needed to be replaced/removed to make it a bootable version -- cannot remember what. Been a long time.

Edit: Apple has OS 9.0.4, 9.1, 9.2.1 available for download on their servers, people have shown how to get at them.
