Services menu dimmed (especially Spech)

When I go to the Services menu under the Application menu everything is dimmed except the selections with a subcatogary (sp?) and those selections in there are dimmed as well. I wanted just to use the speech option to read my speech in
Word. Is there a way to at least enable the speech?
Also, I wanted to post this under the Panther forum here and on apple.com, but I could not find the post button. Does apple and this board shut down posting at nights, or is his just safari acting weird (nothing new)
 
The Services Menu is only available to applications written using the Cocoa API. Open TextEdit and take a look, you can use (almost) everything in there.
 
You have to select some text in order for those services to have anything to "service".

Try again with some text selected...
 
You can also use Cocoa Gestures to activate the services for Cocoa apps without having to click on commands.
