Only time will tell, I fail to see how this thread will garner any discussion, as I haven't read any news that these cards have been reported to die early, and if it has, then this is a duplicate thread, either way, reporting will fix.

In short: In the same macbook pro with 9400 and 9600 chips, the 9600 uses a different bump material, the one previously identified by Nvidia to fail. This was a random sampling of a production unit purchased in store.

Also dont forget that the 8600m gt cards were 80nm cards which ran alot hotter while the new 9600m gt cards are 65nm.

Plus I have a strong irk that the 9600m gt's bumps might be a hit or miss with the bad bumps or good bumps. I think nvidia might have mixed in the rest of the bad bump batches to get rid of them.

Hmmm, I would have to say no. Wait, there could be. Make that a maybe. Actually scratch that... Nobody knows. I don't have problems so what does that mean? There were no good tests done to prove this heh. I'm not denying the possibility but am saying that people come up with "evidence" that may or may not be. It could be certain machines, but nobody will know for a while and as an owner of one I'm not too worried about it since I have AppleCare.

Would be nice if Apple said something.... Last time I heard Apple acknowledges the video problems on the new unibody MBP's maybe even MB's ? But nothing conclusive yet.

I see that the new MBPs are set to possibly have issues, it's nice to know that it doesn't look like nVidia have learnt from the mistakes of the 8600m GT...

I love the smell of napalm in the morning, no wait, thats my gfx card catching fire, cheers nVidia...
 
God I hate nvidia... I'm still keeping this mbp and if it fails it fails and if it lives it lives.

Anyway if apple's next notebooks are not ATI, then I think I'll stick with a mac pro desktop in the future. At least the mac pro's gpu can be swapped out.

"NVIDIA will transition from using high-lead solder (95%Pb/5%Sn) to eutectic solder (63%Sn/37%Pb) flip-chip bump material for the G92 product family. During the transition period NVIDIA will be supplying both high-lead and eutectic bump until inventory is depleted. No other materials are being changed."

So it means its still a mixed bag of the early released batches of the unibody mbp. Maybe this is why that some people are getting the black screen while minutes of gaming and others are not (including myself)?

That would make sense since the Inquirer found half the chip to have lead and the other to be eutectic.

It's not really the heat that's the problem... it's the uneven power draw stressing the lead-based bumps in the 86/9600's

LOL, weren't you the guy desperate to get rid of his 8600m equipped MBP? Now I see you have the glassbook pro, and you are not planning to get rid of it???
 
The latest EFI patch fixed all of my 9600gt crashing issues. I've read some people are still having them, especially in Windows. I guess I was one of the lucky few that the firmware update actually helped.

Naw i'm just sick and tired of it now. I'm going to just keep my mbp and if it breaks within the 3 years then I'll probably get it repaired and if it breaks outside of the 3 years I'll just buy whatever newest mbp is out then.

One thing though that the unibody mbp differs to the previous gen that gets me less worried is that at least the 9400m gt cards are using the good bumps and if the 9600m gt are really defective as the inquirer saids and the 9600m gt dies, we can still use the 9400m gt card.
 
Well, its a case of 'here we go again' for me.

Potted history :

April 07 - purchased new MBP, previous gen from Q4 07

Developed symptoms over the summer :

distorted text when scrolling, particularly in Safari.

white flashes when

- watching Flash video, eg the BBC iPlayer.

- browsing around the ITMS, or

- mousing over Events in iPhoto.

10.5.5 seemed to resolve the issue, but a Genius in London recommended still getting the logic board swapped.

In December, the Birmingham store swapped the LCD panel for another issue, tested the logic board for the nVidia issue, said it was OK, but still replaced it anyway as a courtesy.

The new LCD panel failed after one day, and they agreed to replace the machine with a new unibody, late 08 MBP.

28 days later, it now has the original symptoms above.

Whether these are nVidia related or not still seems uncertain, but whatever is causing them is still doing so in the new unibody machines.
 
I'm really scared of this. Main concern for me when ordering the new unibody 17" was this GPU. Been hoping for something faster than 9600M GT.
 
This issue makes me kind of sad. Not because there are buyers out there who are suffering from it and others are not, but because of the uncertainty the customers are in.

My machine doesn't black out while gaming at all, but am I safe? I don't think so... this simply forces me to buy AACP or sell shortly before the one-year warranty runs out.

Really sad times...
 
9600m GT failure

my late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro seem to have issues with the 9600m gt. Never switched to performance mode until Aperture 3 arrived. I noticed that each time I switch into performance mode, the laptop will not come out of sleep without either a kernel panic or the LCD screen not displaying anything at all.

What is weird is the sleep light respond properly, blinking when the lid is closed and turning off when the lid is open despite not showing any video after going to sleep with the 9600m gt. The genius are baffled and said they don't know what's the problem. Their diagnostic didn't reveal any useful data.

The laptop actually works just fine with the 9400m video. So as far as I know, either the 9600m gt was defected from the get go or became defective sometime later. I am not certain as I never tested the 9600m gt before Aperture 3 arrived.

Of course, as luck would have it...I am 20 days out of warranty. They are holding on to my laptop until the manager comes into the store on Thursday. She has the authority to decide the fate of my laptop. Not sure if this is any indication that the 9600m GT also suffer from the bump problem that plagued the 8600GT or if all this is coincidental. At least we have the 9400m to work off of.

Another thing to note. Sometimes after a the kernel panic, when I go to system preference -> energy saver, I don't even get the option to switch to performance mode. Checking my about mac info, the graphics only show my Macbook Pro having the 9400m. It appears as if the 9600m gt chip failed completely and therefore OSX doesn't even recognize it. Everything will go back to normal after a reboot or two or three. So weird indeed.
