backup of applications

i have recently upgraded to 2.2 but all my previous apps have been lost.
in future upgrades is there a way to avoid losing all my installed apps?

I believe he's talking about jailbroken apps, not ones from the app store.

I am too interested in this, is there a way to back up all of your settings, apps, etc?
