G5 Troubles

Hey!

I was thinking about buying a 2Ghz G5, but I wanted to know if a lot of people are experiencing problems/trouble with them.

None so far! Runs great with stock 512MB RAM, too. Of course I'm going to upgrade ASAP just for the heck of it.

oh, I've had it since late November.
 
I've had my Dual 2GHz since early October and have had no problems with it. I never would have imagined having a computer that simply doesn't crash, but....
i probably just jinxed myself by saying that!
 
Troubles with a G5 ??? Not on my watch!

The only trouble I ever encountered was not wetting my pants when I first saw it face to aluminium perforated face.

I realise that is probably not the kind of response you were looking for, but G5 issues are not that common at all.
 
Actually a lot of people have had problems with the powersupply chirping, especially with external devices plugged in that even draw more power (they do have 600 watt power supplies, while the SP models have a 450). Others have had problems with the fans being too noisy.

Other problems people have experienced are overly noisy Radeon 9800 Pro fans if you order one.

And the last note... a DP 2.0 G5 we ordered at work last week came DOA... we had to bitch out the Apple rep to make them pay for shipping to take it back and replace it.

yeah mine chirps but it does not reduce performance, and I dont mind having a 600W PSU, I just put in a 550W PSU in my friends PC, and 600W IS needed for a dual 2Ghz MONSTER! 😀

And fan noise is not bad at all, it rather quite.

You've got a point, or two, there. But I still don't think that is common enough to warrant concern. That's just my opinion, and knowing all of the above I'd still buy.
 
I have a G5 Dual 2ghz and now i have no troubles, initially however the CPU Thermometer was broke which resulted in the Fans being on at full power all the time, if you have ever heard the g5 fans at full power, it is like a hurricane of air, it could air condition your room in no time whatsoever. It was looudd to make an understatement. I took it to an Apple Specialist and they replaced the CPU's. After that it worked perfectly.
 
Ok, sweet. Got another question: How's the speed of the dual 2Ghz compared to a 400mhz indigo iMac DV (what I currently own)

I'm check it out myself, but the nearest Apple store is a couple hundred miles across the border 🙁
 
first about G5's: in my old company they bought one 2x1.8G5 and it has been more in repair than working in the past two months, it allready had 4 processor replacements!!!! on the other hand a friend has bought the 2X2G5 and it runs smoothly

I can't compare an iMac with a G5 but I did see the difference between my PBG4 400Mhz and his 2X2G5... I have 1GB ram, he has 3GB... were both extensive Photoshop users (I as Photographer, he as graphic designer) when I make scans wich are 715MB sized it takes me a while to just open one in Photoshop... when I arrived at his place, he opened all 5 of the 715mb files at once and very fast indeed... without any trouble or waiting because the Mac is thinking... and was able to do corrections while all these files remained open...

so Yes I noticed a difference when using power-needed applications ;-)
 
The speed of the 2Ghz is off the wall in comparison, whenever i use a Imac G4 1ghz i am like how slow, and then who could stand this. I do not believe there is any competition or comparison for that matter, the 2g g5 is the fastest mac available

Thats what I used before my G5 (iMac 400DV) I had to install a seat belt on my chair for safety when I am using it 😉

from what i can tell, your indigo imac will not even seem like it should be called a computer when put next to the beast that is the 2.0x2

I would not buy one if you can wait a month or two longer for rev. B. I personally know two people who bought a rev A, and both had pretty severe problems with the power supply and fan control. When I went into guitar center the other day...their entire Pro Tools HD system was down- the g5 fans were running like a lawnmower- these things are less than perfect for sure. Check out the apple forums as well as digidesign- you have a lot of high end users swearing to buy PC's. You should wait- you can be sure to see all those bugs ironed out, as well as maybe more HD space and certainly faster processors. BTW, Apple has yet to fix the power supply issue on the rev a's- some are speculating that it is the chip itself. Even new units are producing the chirps with some customers. I almost bought an old 2ghz for with a huge price drop- but russian roulette is not worth it to me. Patience is a virtue.

Wow, so many positive G5 feedback. I do need to voice about the problems with the G5's. Before 10.3.3, my G5 often turn up its fans while sleeping. But now it doesn't do that (actually, it did it once right after the update, but hasn't for a whole month +). Once in a while, my G5 freezes upon wake-up, but it's about 4 times a week and not that bad, since startup is less than a minute. I have the chirping issue, but it grows on you, and isn't bad after a while. Overall, while I feel like I have a "bad" G5, it's not bad at all for a machine I use about 6 hours a day at least. Great machine, well worth the purchase, especially when Apple does update them. Right Apple?

Dude I still think the chirping issue is unacceptable. Do you know the size of the market for "quiet" PSUs in the PC world? It is growing everyday b/c we want it to be quiet. You shouldn't expect any less from a company that DEMANDS quality like Apple...I say tell them to replace it with a newer PSU 🙂
