Microsoft will share new way to can spam

Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corp., is taking up arms against a sea of spammers.

Gates yesterday unveiled a campaign to establish technology standards that could make it easier to filter out the billions of unwanted e-mail messages that flood the Internet every day. The plan, called the Coordinated Spam Reduction Initiative, features ideas that have long been discussed by antispam specialists, but the backing of the world's largest software company could go a long way toward full-scale deployment of the new technologies.

In a speech before an Internet security conference in San Francisco, Gates predicted that the Microsoft initiative "will help change the economic model for sending spam and put spammers out of business."
