In this thread you will find lists of free giveaways from the iTunes Store for 2009, organized by country. Free tunes are usually (not always) available for a week beginning sometime on a Tuesday. Bold marks giveaways that appear to be free indefinitely (usually Audiobooks). Links to the newest free iTunes can usually be found on the left side of the iTunes Store "Music" page. The DD, SOTW, and LSOTW links may work only when a song is newly offered. A huge thank you to the volunteers who maintain these lists!

When it first became free, "Evacuate" by The Boxer Rebellion was in iTunes Plus format, with no DRM. Then it changed to a standard iTunes version, with DRM.

When looking at a song in the iTunes Store, here's a handy way to find any available free song by that artist:

1. Click the arrow to the right of the artist's name in the Artist column.
2. Click the arrow on the right side of the artist page, next to SEE ALL SONGS BY THIS ARTIST.
3. Click the Price column heading to sort ascending by price. That brings free songs to the top (along with Album-only songs that have no price).
4. If there are more pages for the artist, click the More arrow at the bottom right to look at each page.

I posted about my findings here yesterday (which I mentioned over at my site), but it seems that the post has been removed.

Anyway, I realised that on some occasions, going to a song's album does not guarantee you the DRM version.

Take this week's Stop the Clock tracks (both English and Spanish) for example. The album page shows the iTunes Plus logo, but once you add the said track into your shopping cart, the iTunes Plus logo is gone. Purchase the shopping cart and you'll see yourselve downloading the DRM-ed version. This does not happen with the Discovery Download track (Beni's My Love Sees You).

The only sure method I found so far is to download those tracks using your iPhone or iPod touch. I managed to get all the tracks as 256 kbps DRM-free versions thru this method.

Conclusively, end of March seems to be a long way to go knowing that such a bug/feature exists.

You still have to jump through hoops to make sure you get them though - downloading from the SOTW links gives you the DRM versions
(tested on Empire Of The Sun SOTW in the UK and The Last Vegas SOTW in the US).

They sometimes don't have their act together if you try getting songs when they are first posted. This week they posted the LSOTW and the DD first, then added the SOTW hours later, showing as free on the display page but not free in your shopping cart. After a few more hours, all three became free. If it was already in your shopping cart, you might have needed to delete it and add it again.

So it's almost always best to wait for things to settle down mid-day Tuesday, and little harm in waiting for Wednesday or later. I say "almost" because there was one song that was made free at first and then disappeared, so only the earlybirds got it.

Of course, if you limit downloads to the free songs that you actually like, you'll have fewer songs to worry about!
