Quanta to Produce Apple Netbook in 2009?

ElectronicPulp first pointed out on a Taiwan Headlines article that indicates that Quanta is expected to produce netbooks for Sony and Apple in 2009:

Leung noted netbook PCs will drive much of his company`s shipment growth in 2009. In addition to the orders from existing brand clients as Acer, Lenovo, Hewlett Packard and BenQ, Quanta is expected to add Sony and Apple as clients for the contract manufacture of netbook computers in 2009.

The reference is made without much significance, and so we wonder the "netbook" reference was intended to be used.

Netbooks typically refer to low-cost scaled down laptops that have recently been released by PC manufacturers using lower cost Atom processors. Apple has said they are not interested in the market at this time.

What is Quanta? I hope they are American manufacturers. I am hoping for a laptop of better quality in the future. I have had my MBP for 3 years and the frame is already bending without even dropping it.

Thats good. The MacBooks that you mentioned must be the new ones, because mine was made in China. The new MacBooks look like they are made well, hopefully the tablet or netbooks will be made the same way.

I bet. I am glad to see that Apple put the disc drive of the new MBP on the side, because I always press down on the front. The new unibodys aluminum also looks a lot thicker than the old ones.

They're all made in China. Apple (and most other PC companies) have manufacturing contracts with Asus and Quanta, which are companies headquartered in Taiwan but have relocated most of their factories to the Mainland, AFAIK.

American manufacturers? Are you kidding? ... That term is quickly becoming an oxymoron for anything other than defense contractors and Ford/GM/Chrysler vehicles.

Your 100% right and how will this save American jobs? What is Obama do with "keeping" one of American's most important companies in the United States.

SONY should made their PC's in Japan. It is not Chinese.

In short, no, never in a million years and its pure irony.

The 'western' world wants everything cheaper than it was yesterday, wants it now and wants it better. Then they wonder why all the contractors for said product are made in far eastern sweatshops and their own nations workers are losing jobs hand over fist...

You want cheaper cuts of meat at the supermarket, so you wonder why there are relentless cattle health scares, you want cheap toys for your children and wonder why there is safety recall after safety recall and you wonder why the domestic car market in the US is running on borrowed time, as the rest of the world has embraced the economical microcar, youre still churning out 4.6 litre V8's that are lucky to to 10 to the gallon whilst the world laughs.

It would indeed be awesome if our machines were made in the USA, except yeah, you're right it will cost so much more money. And my 1st gen macbook is holding up just fine so i'm alright with manufacturing in the other countries.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind it if the price to buy a Mac was only $50 or $100 more if it was made in the US. But if it was a couple hundred more, I would want to stick with China.

Does it occur to you that history shows that civilisations have cycles. If you study ancient history, civilisations often were dominant for several hundred years, perhaps because of trade or technology. Then, when those factors turned, the civilisation declined. No civilisation has remained dominant forever.

Either you can bury your head in the sand, or you can make an educated prediction. With the technological shift going from US/West to the Asian giants, the technological dominance is gradually shifting like sand in an hour glass. In about 100-200 years, America will be a spent force, and reduced to third world level poverty.

Moreover, there is only one reason for all this happening. Why do corporations shift manufacturing overseas, rather than retain in locally to give jobs to their communities? Greed. Money. Selfishness. Those things will never change, and so the shift of technology to the Asian countries cannot be stopped.

Let's give it 3-4 generations, and by then America will be like an Argentina. Remember, at the turn of the last century, Argentina was among the richest nations on earth. Just as companies can rise and fall, the same can happen to nations. It just takes longer because of the scale involved, but the shifts can and do, and will happen.
