Macworld San Francisco 2009 Rumor Roundup

With Macworld San Francisco 2009 (MWSF) beginning next week, MacRumors provides this Rumor Roundup as a summary of major rumors circulating around the Mac Web before the event.

The biggest news about Macworld came early when Apple announced that Steve Jobs would not be delivering the 2009 keynote address nor will Apple be participating in future Macworld events. While Apple's official reason for the withdrawal was that trade shows are becoming less important, some believe that Apple simply wanted more control of their own release timetable rather than being dependent on this yearly event. Of course, health questions about Steve Jobs were again raised as another possible reason.

While this rumor season started off slowly, the past few weeks have raised some interesting possibilities.

I would love Google to release a Mac version of Picassa. I like it much more than iPhoto, and I don't know why.

Arn, you might want to update your post as new rumors shows up:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...d_mac_pro.html

Anyways, I originally though that this MacWorld will be a boring and new product announcements because there will be no Stevenote, but this MacWorld could be pretty exciting.

meh, not really worth adding IMO, they just mention that they might announce a possible 28" iMac and the new Mac Pro could be released in Feb. sounds like a lot of 'maybe's, 'mights', and 'possibly's to me. Anyone in the market for a new iMac will be waiting till Tuesday anyway so throwing a 28" iMac rumor into the mix without any solid information on it seems rather pointless to me.

Nice rumor, but I have doubts about this one.

28" iMac? Funny we haven't heard any other rumors. And what resolution would this iMac be? 1920*1200 is a bit too small, while 2560*1600 is too big. Although Core i7 is possible given that we saw Core Duo on the iMacs before the Power Macs. Predicting the rest of the iMac line is fairly obvious, but that doesn't mean he's unreliable.

Nehalem Mac Pro... February does seem on the early side, given that Gainestown isn't in production yet and most likely won't be released until mid/late Q1 2009.

Apple has had event/release on late February.

Despite my doubts, the info in this rumor is quite sensible, and I am strangely optimistic about this one. (But the last time I was "strangely optimistic," the rumor was wrong. )

There's been one each year until iLife '06. From iLife '08, people are predicting a 1.5-year cycle which would mean the next versions might be due at around MWSF.

27" or 28" displays would be 1920x1200—at least the ones that ViewSonic and others make. I've never understood the point of those displays unless you plan on using them as a TV, for example, and need more inches but not the extra resolution. Some people like them so they can sit further back from the screen but I'd prefer to have the extra resolution myself. (I have a 30" for that reason!)

Exactly. A "28"" iMac is ludicrous. It would be 30" and 2560x1600 if anything.

why does everyone seem to conveniently forget that MacWorld 2007 is when Apple announced the first iPhone?

adding some fuel to the fire here: walmart shoppers are not Apple's target demographic, yet the iPhone was released there AFTER xmas. why not before xmas to hopefully sell a few units in the crush?

seems like the perfect demographic for an iPhone "nano".

add to it that Apple cannot sell it outside of at&t service, which limits their market penetration. building a different phone on their own dime allows them to forgo at&t... and appeal to a larger market. think of the new iPhone as a PAYG phone u can buy at Apple without a contract, or get it for $50 with a contract for carriers other than at&t.

sounds like the ideal walmart phone and will expand the app store's potential for revenue growth.

oh wait... MacWorld is an unlikely place to introduce an iphone. har.

I saw it. PCPer is the source and has been wrong in the past aside from their speculative piece. And they are basing this on partially erroneous information (new cooling system in iMac). That being said, it's possible - 28" iMac. but even they don't seem to think it will available until after Macworld.

Added it to the "other" possibilities section.

I didn't forget. The reason it's unlikely to be released at Macworld is not because it's Macworld. It's because no reliable sources have said it's coming at Macworld.

Obviously you haven't read about the firewire thing then?

Honestly...I'm more excited for this keynote than previous one. So much more mystery surrounding this one.

I agree, with the previous few events we've seen leaked images of products beforehand, so far not with this one.

Possibly because there aren't any new products? Or if they are purely updates, there aren't any external changes?
