iPod touch LOUD, low pitched, continuously repeating popping sound when plugging into stereo

...but not at all through the headphones!

Cable is ok; I can plug the MBP in with no problems. It's a repeating low-pitched "popping" sound at around 3 beats per second or so coming through the stereo only while the ipod touch 2g is powered ON. Music, Pandora, whatever--and it sometimes comes and goes, with no discernable pattern. Not correlated with intensity of the sound output...I am totally flabbergasted.

Ideas? Thanks.
