I have never used newsgroups yet , is there any software required for reading, downloading etc ? If yes whats a good "free" software to use , and where do i start ?

Yes, to read a newsgroup, software is required. Some email clients do it (I know Outlook Express for Windows and Entourage for Mac, for instance), but Mail doesn't.
Doing a quick Google turned up Pineapple News (http://www.platinumball.net/pineapple/news/macosx/), which looks pretty good from the site ;).
Hope this helps.

Pineapple news is pretty good. In general, you should have newsgroup access through your internet provider. I haven't seen one that doesn't, but it's been a while since I've looked at ISP offerings.
