Apple to Attend CES in 2010?

Cult of Mac first reported yesterday that Apple had decided to exhibit at next year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010.

We had originally filed the report on Page 2 as it seems to contradict Apple's reasoning for pulling out of future Macworld events. Specifically, Apple has claimed that trade shows are becoming less important venues and not worth the time or cost to participate. In fact, Schiller even acknowledged that the January time-frame for the Macworld event simply didn't coincide with Apple's product release life cycles.

AppleInsider, however, is now also reporting from their sources that Apple is planning on exhibiting at CES 2010. The rumor site describes the move as a "done deal" and that Apple is up to the challenge of sitting amongst its competition.

Come on! dont apple! dont hang out with the rest! do your own show..any ways whole media from all the worl looks at you! plus i dont want to go to las vegas..i like the events being at san francisco since i live in cupertino!

This is a little disheartening. I can see Apple pulling out of the shows altogether, but to abandon Macworld for CES?

it would got me mad too...i bought my ticket for Macworld and Stevee wasnt there..and i was disapointing..did not like the keynote. the only people clapping were the apple employees!

If Apple does any keynote at all they will be expected to blow the competition out of the water even more-so than at Macworld. They will be directly compared to what MS has announced etc. Given their stated reasons for leaving Macworld, I can't imagine this happening. Of course, their stated reason may have been BS...

I doubt it.

The main reason Apple pulled from MW is not to be tight to a calendar event. Why in the hell would they choose CES that is at the same time of MW? It just does not make any sense.

Depends on what they do at CES.

If it is just demo products and try to "wow" people and maybe release software updates (iPhone 4.0 anyone?), great. I can't see them using CES as an opportunity to release new products - it would contradict the whole reason for leaving Macworld.

This makes absolutely no sense. Why on earth would they pull out of a show were they get all the limelight, just to go to a show where they'll have to compete with the likes of HP, Dell, and Microsoft to get attention. IT's absolutely stupid to even suggest that Apple would do this. Apple will have a yearly show that will only be for Apple. That's the only thing that would make sense.

Why? macworld and WWDC are two seperate shows.

I say this is a good move, I dont see why people are hating it. Whats the difference if they were at a show with other vendors?

Its not like apple is gonna change their ways if they go to CES, it might be better, you never know. Apple will still be better then some of the others so theres no need to cry over this

Keep in mind, apple had nothing to do with macworld other then participating in their show. Macworld will still be there, just apple wont be there.

If true, I think the logic is that at MacWorld Apple was preaching to the converted (for the most part). Whether or not MacWorld happens, the people who go to MacWorld would buy Apple stuff, regardless.

At CES, Apple has the ability to reach out to a bunch of insiders, whose decisions matter to Apple's sales strategy. My understanding is that CES is not open to the public, but is reserved for people in the business. These are people whose buying decisions matter to Apple, and it's effort to increase their market share. These are the people who will open the door to new markets for Apple.

Apple won't need to reserve their newest announcements for CES like they did for MW. At MW the keynote was being rated by people who already knew and loved the product, and were expecting the next revolution. At CES the keynote attendees will have a much lower expectation.

I'm not saying that moving to CES is good, just that I see Apple's logic.

If this is true, it smells like a negotiating ploy to me.

First, like others have said, it makes no sense to leave MacWorld, (where Apple is front and center stage) and attend CES where it has to compete with just about everybody else for attention and new product announcements.

Second - They have stated that they want to release products on their own schedule. That they can use their stores to get the message out. If so, then why even consider CES?

Third - the way they announced at the last minute they weren't going to attend MacWorld anymore, and Steve wasn't going to give the keynote was odd. It caught everyone off guard. They could've announced that this was going to be their last show until AFTER MacWorld ended.

To me, this is a negotiating ploy to get MacWorld to lower their rates. They know that if they're going to make announcements and product demos at another conference, it makes MacWorld less important. Or could end it altogether.

I say that this is either totally bogus, or one big game of chicken.
