I'm considering a Siemens S56 phone to use on the Cingular network mainly in Southern California. What are the user experiences with this phone? I'm particularly interested in bluetooth syncing with Address Book and the user interface.

I am also considering the Sony-Ericsson T616, but I understand the signal quality with this phone is dicey in this area (and I don't really want the camera).

i have the t616 on cingular gsm network, yeah the signal is dicey when inside a building. basically the signal is good until you walk way inside a building. by windows or resonable close to an outside wall you can get a signal. other than that than that it is good. i had better results with my tdma phone inside the same buildings, but the signal strength still kinda sucked inside, but i still got a signal. i think more of a gsm thing rather than a phone, but the only gsm i have used are sony-ericsson models.

btw i am reffering to buildings on a college campus, to give you a picture of what type of buildings i am talking about.

I was considering it until I saw the SE z600. The SX is a bit too bulky for me. The z600 is great, though! BT works like a charm. I can actually use the phone without having to sit on my roof and hold the TV antenna, unlike my old i730! Damn you Nextel!! :p

Is that a Motorola phone? I don't see where any of those models are available on the Cingular system.

The reactions to all of these phones seem so polarized. People either seem to love or hate them.

If you're talking about the z600, it's unlocked and I use it for T-Mobile. It's available in Europe/Asia at the moment...it might be coming out soon. Check out plemix.com for all of the phones for your needs. Cingular uses sim cards, right? If so, you could use the z600 and others..

616

I bought an s56 from the cingular store and I was back to return it before closing that day. The interface is a nightmare, and the screen is pretty lame, and all in all, it feels pretty flimsy. I bought the 616, as it was the only other BT phone offered. It cost $50 more, and looking back, I'd have paid 200 for it. It's an unbelievable device. It's where the s56 might be in another 2 years. The screen on it is so much better than that of the s56. The screen wasn't an issue when I was shopping initially, I expected that in the range I was looking, that I'd get something acceptable, but the s56 was like pulling a 14" crt of the box- I'd expected something more of an lcd, and then when I got the 616, I got the cinema display. Don't knock the camera on the 616 either, you never know when the moment will arise. It's fun from time to time, but not something overly useful.
The 616 interface is far better; my mother can save a phone number now, something she never was able to follow before. Any ringtones or images you send via BT go where they should, with the s56 you had to wade through a messy file structure and confirm a million times before you could save something.
At this point the 616 has become much more than a phone, it's my pda, alarm clock, remote control, and I would seriously consider taking it for a test run to check the signals in your area. I would also check to see that it's the phone model and not a CDMA(?)/GSM network thing. Up here in NE, they had just about gotten the network complete when they changed the equipment. Things were a little rocky during the summer, but no complaints any longer.
Also, if you purchase as a new customer from Best Buy, you can get a great deal, and a better return policy. The protection plan for $40 got me through 7 or 8 phones in the past 3 years, without upgrade fees.
Hope this helps, best of luck

I want to echo what TangerineDream said. I got a S56 from Cingular because of the reputation of the T616 and the interface and screen on the S56 were deplorable. I switched to the S-E T616 and there does not appear to be a significant difference in signal reception, however the phone is much more intuitive and it syncs well with iSync. The only downsides to the T616 (besides Cingular - I hate 'em) are the buttons are small (but the pointing stick works really well) and the screen is hard to read outside.

Thanks for the advice. I was leaning towards the T616 before I spoke to the salesman at the Cingular store. He seemed more knowledgeable then most and said he gets more returns on the T616 then any other phone. I don't think he'd have any ulterior motive for saying this because the T616 would cost me some bucks and the S56 is free with a two year contract. Based on what I've heard, I'm tempted to try the T616 and see if it works out for me. Is anyone familiar with Cingular's return policy on phones? We're current customers and would be re-upping for two years.

hey, for the return policy, its within 15 days. but you wont get the process fee back tho. i think its $18 but u can always call 611 and argue that you are doing an upgrade. they will always wave that for you. Also, dont sign a 2 yr contract...its not worth it.... and about the phones, 616 is really bad...im sorry to say but its not a user friendly phont and its a bit slow.. if i have to pick bt those 2 id go with the s56. But check out the nokia 3100 is pretty nice too. even tho the buttons seems really weird, but its a good phone to use.

Arrrg. I just knew somebody would say they hated the T616 and prefer the S56. The Nokia is out -- no bluetooth. BTW, contracts are worthwhile if you're not a plan-jumper and don't need a new phone every year.

So, for those who like the T616: what about the criticism that it's slow? I've heard this complaint before.
