Buy a Mac Now, Get iLife '09 for $9.95 (Up-to-Date Program)

Apple has posted details about it's iLife '09 Up-to-date program which allows those purchasing qualifying Mac computers to get the iLife '09 upgrade for a nominal fee ($9.95).
Quote:
Customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac computer or an Apple Certified Refurbished computer on or after January 6, 2009, that does not include iLife ’09 can upgrade to iLife ’09 for US$9.95 plus tax.*

The program ends on March 28, 2009. Your order must be postmarked or faxed by April 3, 2009, and received by April 10, 2009, so order your upgrade now.
This program allows customers to continue buying new Macs now even though iLife '09 as not started shipping.

I could understand for people who bought a new Mac before the annoucement, but I think it should be a free upgrade for anybody who is buying between MacWorld & when iLife 09 ships. Just my two cents.

That's good to hear, since my MBP MB134LL/A is on the list...

Just wish they could take care of the form at Cal's Scholar's Workstation v. faxing it into Apple...

I gather the fee would be to cover mail costs. Which is weird, considering it apparently costs Apple $17 to post a CD in Australia, which it would actually cost them about $8 (AUD)... that's $9 worth of handling!

I bought it a little earlier, right after the announcement because I really needed it soon. I'm pissed they don't allow for those customers to get a 10$ upgrade and like others already said, give it away for free on new machines.

Katie Cotton ought to know that this is NOT how you do good PR

No matter what the cut off date is someone bought it just before that = always someone to complain.

You never win in technology pricing. There's always something faster, if not cheaper, right around the corner.

Are you really surprised? This IS Apple we're talking about. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't some "up-to-date" things from Apple in the past free?

New macs???

Sort of reading between the lines a bit, but does that mean new iMacs and/or minis around late March when this program finishes and all macs ship with iLife '09?

Me too. I bought my MacPro a week before Christmas. Any chance Apple would have mercy on us impulsive customers?

iLife '09 is supposed to be shipping at the end of this month. However, the late march date could very well be for resellers who will be stuck with computers which only have iLife '08 installed. This gives them time to sell the Macs they have in stock.

Or, as you say, it could mean we have to wait until the end of march for new Mac minis. Which is still better news than "no more Mac minis, get a MacBook or iMac".

You bought it two weeks before it was even announced. 5 minutes of googling would've told you MacWorld was coming up.

I agree. I understand mailing costs and so forth, but if they're promising it it should not cost extra.

One other amendment is I suppose for Macs purchased now it's one thing, but certainly after iLife is actually released it should be free, because at that point it's just luck of the draw whether it's preinstalled.

Once iLife 09 comes out all Apple resellers (at least Apple Stores and Best Buy) will get what called a flat pack of iLife and a bunch of Apple approved seals. Someone from Apple will then come in and open up every computer box and insert the iLife disk in it and reseal it. Problem is that Apple wont send more than a certain amount and if there are already computers in transit or if someone bought a computer before the flat pack arrived then those machines would get stuck without iLife 09 (at least at best buy that happened with iLife 08). If the machine ends up without iLife 09 we usually just throw in a retail copy for the customer as its supposed to be part of the package

That's a rip. Should be FREE after they announced it. 9.95 for those that bought 60 days ago maybe...They are dropping 2000 bucks on a machine, give it to them. This years upgrade is minimal anyways.

Man I remember back in the day when Apple was great about their Up to Date program like Final Cut and such. It encouraged people to buy ahead of time.

That sucks... It should be like the iphone rebate. Since they dropped the price right after and really pissed everybody off. It should be like $20(I'd pay 20, 30 for it, but not 80) for people who have just recently bought a new mac.

LIKE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess this is just another way for Apple to make EVEN more MONEY. iLife08 was total Bull **** any ways... Give me 09 to make up for it.

Didn't realize that happened. That's a fair and reasonable approach. No one buying a new mac after iLife is released should have to pay . . . before that? Not so concerned.

Just an FYI, last year when they had this program for ilife '08, a bunch of people who were technically not within the upgrade window were nonetheless able to qualify for this deal. It couldn't hurt to plug in your serial number.

Also, I do recall a bunch of users calling Apple directly to plead their case and with the right CR, they were able to get their software for either $9.99 or for free.

Good luck
