I know you can boot up in the single user mode using command-s, but I've been unable to do that since I got my G4 titanium powerbook (10.3.2). Is there a sort of trick to doing this? Thanks.
 
Just press and hold command+s as soon as you hear the boot chime and until you see a black screen with text.

The only way this could be disabled is by setting the open firmware password.
